July 30, 2007 at 3:08 pmNo offense taken, Ben…
I agree with you completely but my concerns are with the people who seem more interested in bashing Apple and FCP for some bugs that obviously need to be worked out.
As for the commercial end of this issue… I don’t believe these issues should keep anyone from upgrading since the number of bugs far out-weight the additional features that have been added to FCS2.
If you talk with the Avid folks, they have their share of bugs that are killing them, too. The reason for the COW is to discuss and share ways of avoiding this problems.

Your VAR should have known this. It’s no secret. Encore/Premiere Pro/Soundbooth on the Mac are Intel-specific. You also get OnLocation, which is Windows-only, but will run under Boot Camp (though I haven’t tested this). The other apps (Photoshop, AE, etc.) are Universal.”Our VAR was not aware of this and his Adobe representative did not offer this information either. I did not look myself because I gave my VAR the specs, a Quad G5 and a Mac Pro for the two systems.
We’re returning one full copy of the suite and are contemplating returning both suites if we can’t get Encore working.

July 31, 2007 at 1:54 amHey Walter, and everyone else,
Not sure if you already knew this but one can burn HD-DVD’s (onto a regular DVD5 that is)right now.

I am of course awaiting Blu-Ray capablilities from Apple more than just about anyone. The HD-DVD capablilty on a regular DVD-5 has pretty much flown under the radar.
Best.

July 31, 2007 at 4:37 am[lasvideo] “Unfortunatley our Avids set the standards and expectations our clients (and us) have for SPEED (long renders in SD and HD projects for extremely simple Motion 3 effects) and
reliability (render caches dont ever disappear on the DS).”I can only assume that bit about Avid DS never losing render cache files is either coming from someone who has little experience with the system or it is a joke.
I can tell you first-hand that DS has more than done its fair share of “where’d it go?” with render caches for me. And considering the type of rendering I’m generally doing on DS (lots of compositing/fx means long render times) it can be infuriating to open your project and see all that time was for not even though it was just there. I think maybe having a red line for needing to render is just asking for trouble – I see red alright when it loses a couple hours of renders. I hear taupe is soothing; maybe render needed should be changed to taupe color as a general rule for all software packages. 😉
I’m not saying FCP/FCS is perfect but Avid DS is a far cry from perfect as well. The second the perfect editing/fx package is compiled, I think we’ll all switch to it. But much like the old saying for expecting a G5 in a laptop, I think we can expect the perfect editing/fx package to be released around the time the sun dies. 🙂

July 31, 2007 at 9:34 amAh, but you see in this case there is no ‘Apple bashing’ going on. This is not a “FCP sucks” thread. In fact, it was started by someone who is a committed FCP user – and who has had a problem with the upgrade. One that others have had as well. Although this problem has not yet affected me, the fact that Apple has acknowledged it means it IS an issue, and may be a reason for some people to wait. Professionals have every right to wait for systems to be as stable as they currently are. One broadcaster I work for still has a number of Media Composer 9 suites which are still in use because the new Nitris and Adrenaline suites are less reliable (and because they are cheapskates obviously).
I also don’t agree that FCS2 is a need-to upgrade for users who primarily make use of FCP only. Sure, Color is nice etc. and Motion 3 will be great when it’s stable, but for users with a standard workflow and edit needs, FCP6 offers no substantial new benefits if you work in DV, Uncompressed SD/HD and wish to continue doing so. I appreciate things have changed under the hood considerably, with multi-format timelines etc, but that’s of less benefit when FCP doesn’t work reliably.
Once again, I am a committed and passionate FCP user. This means I can have a discussion with other users about the faults and bugs of FCP – mostly so I can figure out what actually ARE bugs, and which are down to my own stupidity. I know many posts here on the Cow fall into the latter catagory, but some don’t – and for me, those are the worthwhile threads. Please, let’s not have every such thread overtaken with comments such as “well, Avids crash too, you know” or “FCP is the best NLE ever, and mine never crashes”. Often, they insult the intelligence of many Cow users.
Clearly, this is just my opinion.

August 1, 2007 at 10:21 pmI’ll just chime in here with my recent experiences re: FCP2 upgrade. After performing an upgrade on three nearly identical systems (Dual 2.7GHz G5, 4GB DDR SDRAM, Nvidia 5200 or ATI? card, Kona2) we have begun to experience random crashing of FCP to desktop with the error message “FCP unexpectedly quit…” No hardware changes were made during the upgrades.
Calls to my local support engineer indicate there may be general stability issues – expect patches in Septemeber for IBC. I’ve also done a “Send Feedback” to Apple regarding our issues and recommend anyone else experiencing different behavior after the upgrade to do the same. FCP v 6.0.1, OSX v.10.4.10, QT v.7.2

August 2, 2007 at 1:21 pmI have noticed these kernel crashes you speak of…
I have a Mac Pro Quad 3.0 with 8 gig of RAM, an ATI X1900XT video card, and all of the necessary updates applied. And it seems that my FCS is still a little unstable, even after installing the Pro Application Support updates that were supposed to address these issues.
