The SD slot has a few more features

Lack of Expresscard still sucks though

[Philip Owens] ” The 17″ is FAR too bi”

[Philip Owens] ” I will absolutely have to look elsewhere”

So you dump Apple buy ALL new software, yes ALL because none of the software you have on your mac can will run on Windows.

You then buy a 15″ Windows machine, please keep in mind that those computers are not as nicely physically engineered as a machine from Apple so your new 15″ Windows machine is going to be bigger physically then a Apple 15″, and quite possibly it will almost be as big as the 17″Apple machine you say is to big.

There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.
Don’t let technology get in the way of your creativity!

You are correct – no Mac software runs on PC’s. But who said I was planning to “dump Apple”? My only concern is with the 15″ MBP. I would continue to work on a MacPro, naturally, and I already own all the software I would need for that.

No-one said it would be pretty, desirable, or perfect.

The good part: a lot of non-video types will want to get rid of their perfectly good MacBook Pros to buy the latest and greatest model. So there should be plenty of bargains in used 15″ MBPs, and they hold up pretty well. I just got a nice 15″ MBP for $650 and that was before WWDC.

Nothing is permanent. But even in the worst case scenario, we’ll all get by!

I got a call from my business rep at the local Apple Store last night telling me they are offering incredible deals right now on the current models that are EOL. I don’t need one, but if I did, great time to buy one.

Absolutely. And, it’s perfectly possible, if not likely, that Apple will resolve this temporary hiccup for video pros. I’d surprised if they didn’t revise this decision in the course of the next year, in which case, panic over. And since my desktop is a Quad G5, and can’t go Snow Leopard, that’ll be the first system to get rotated out anyway. I can wait until next year for a new 15″ laptop. But I can’t wait much longer than that…

    Walter,

Or better yet, use a Matrox CompressHD ($500) and take advantage of the Mac you already invested in and create real the best quality H.264 Blu-Ray video within Apple Compressor

We’ve never gotten H.264 to work with BluRay. H.264 is not used for any BluRay disc I have purchased. Everything is MPEG-2. We already use Compressor to make our MPEG-2’s.

Now after you make this “best quality H.264 Blu-Ray video within Apple Compressor” what do you propose to do with it? Take it to Encore? Good luck. Use Toast? Not going to have a very good menu.

Since DoStudio has the encoder built in so we don’t even have to use Compressor anymore. Why invest another $500 when I already have a professional BluRay authoring and compression system?

I believe if you’re going to use an H.264 file for blu-ray then Adobe’s suite will compress it correctly. Compressor currently doesn’t support the right H.264 profile for blu-ray.

If I understand it correctly, thats exactly where Matrox’s CompressHD/MAX technology comes it, as over and above the hardware accelerated encoding it allows the necessary profile support within Compressor (and other QT compatible apps)
