original video much clearer than preview/rendered video
So I’m pretty clueless when it comes to the technical parts of sony vegas and my camera.. I have been using sony vegas for a couple of years but I get by with video tutorials for things I dont understand, and have come across a new problem I can’t seem to fix. I have a sony hx300 camera, it has a 50x zoom and another 2x digital zoom inside that (for a total of 100x zoom), and I took some video and imported it to my computer, it looks great, but when I put it in sony vegas 12, I’m guessing its converting the AVCHD to sfk and theres a difference in quality between the original and rendered version. I adjusted all my settings to pretty high settings, even in the preview, and in both the rendered and preview it looks worse in quality. Also the video at times is shaky and it looks fine and sharp in the original the rendered version obviously lost some frames. I’m pretty sure that the conversion is where the problem lies, but how should I convert differently, what settings can I maybe change instead, etc?

You do not need to convert AVCHD files. Vegas Pro 12 can edit them just fine. I edit AVCHD with no issues. You must understand that the AVCHD file format can be pretty taxing to systems that have lower-end hardware or low RAM amounts.
I’m not saying this will solve your clarity issues but it quite possibly can be a video card issue.

Good guess but that’s not what’s happening. 😉
Vegas Pro does not convert your video. The .sfk files are tiny metadata files that Vegas creates. You can safely ignore them. Your video is still the original AVCHD files from your camera.
I can see from your screen shots that your video Preview is set to Auto. try setting it to Best (Full) and see if your video looks as good as the original. It should. The Preview windows is just a preview. You can adjust the quality lower so that the video plays back faster. It’s up to you. The video will still render with full quality.

After a bit of snooping around I figured it wasn’t the converting, I noticed the .mts is still being used, which I assume is virtually the same as avchd. I also realize the preview is just a preview, but even when I rendered the clip in sony vegas, no effects or anything, on pretty high rendering settings I think, I put the two clips side by side (the original and rendered version) and, though it was hard to spot at first, there was an difference in quality/frame rate. I used both the basic windows player to play it and VLC media player, both showed the same difference. My original, though the shot in and of itself is very shaky/fast at times looked very constant, while the rendered version didnt look as fluid, which I am assuming is from a loss of frames(?).

Thanks for the response. I’m not sure what constitutes as good, or decent but my specs are as followed:
8 gigs Ram
i7-3630QM intel core processor with a 2.40 GHz
64 bit operating system
windows 8
some 600 gigs of memory, and my video card I think is an intel(R) HD graphics 4000I’ve never had an issue like this before but then again this is the first time I’ve tried to use a camera of this quality with sony vegas.

What render type and template did you use? If you are using AVCHD source and you render to Sony AVC with the AVCHD … template that matches your source, you should get the same visual quality in your render as the original. If you are “losing frames” it’s because you are not selecting the same frame rate as the original.

Intel HD4000 graphics is the graphics that is integrated with the CPU. Your system does not have a separate video card, which 99.99% of the time yields better performance.

I really appreciate your responses! I changed it to match my source and saw a huge difference in frame rate that is definitely on par with the original video! But the video itself rendered like this:
there are these bars across everything, which is a completely new thing.

Actually, wait! I just tried the same file in windows media player rather than VLC and it looks awesome! No bar problems! Not sure why, but as long as its fixed someway I think I’m satisfied! Thanks so much everyone!

Those bars look like an interlacing problem which could be caused by your project not being set correctly. What Deinterlace Method are you using in your project properties? It should be set to Blend Fields which is the default.
