New MacPros yes i want one!

I’m gonna go shoot some video on my outdated and obsolete EX-1, come back to the studio, ingest it into my outdated and obsolete Macpro quad, edit and render it and hand the client an outdated and obsolete SD DVD and make some money. TTFN!!!

If I am not upgrading from any previous computer (as this will be my first purchase), is the minimum (8-core) configuration (the two 2.26ghz setup) worth it or should I just consider the top of line (the two 2.93ghz $$$$!!) setup?

The apps I will be running will be:

FCS2

On the Bootcamp side; Vista 64bit –
Vegas Pro (64bit)
Audition 3
Adobe CS4 (possibly, not sure yet)

Can anybody forsee any problems that I may need to be aware of in regards to running these apps on the new MacPros?

I’m aware of the architecture changes David. The point I was making is that Apple compares the 3.2Ghz previous Xeon with the 2.93Ghz Nehalem, quoting speed increases (from memory) of between 2.4 and 1.5x speeds.

Unfortunately, that’s like comparing an old Mac Pro to an iMac, as there’s a massive price difference between these two systems (around £1000 over here plus tax).

Of course, you also get 6Gb of Apple RAM (a pretty inexpensive upgrade) and a newer graphics card.

My point – I will wait to see if the huge price increase on the top end system is justified by the huge performance increase, as these Apple figures are usually – well – a little generous

I’m with Walter – a refurb in the summer would suit me fine.

Definitely. Makes it harder to scrap 6gigs to replace with 3rd party than the base 2gigs they used to come with.
3rd party is still much cheaper if filing the box or going up to 16 gigs (8X2gig modules.)

If you need to run two monitors w/DVI just buy the a Mini Display Port to DVI adapter for $29. No need for a second gfx card.

A little research shows that the 2.26Ghz Xeon sells for around $500 and the 2.93Ghz for around $1600. That’s volume pricing by the way.

So that’s a couple of grand more chips in there….

Yes, adding the fastest chips jumps the price up $2600 US right away.

RAM is only $500 for 16GB.
