[Shane Ross] “The new Mac Pros look like Apple Marketting trying to make sure that we buy ONLY Apple equipment. And this is a STUPID stupid move. “

Yeah, without having any clue as to what Apple is doing with Final Cut Studio, I don’t see any reason to rush out and replace the machine you have right now. If you’re in the market for a new machine, absolutely go buy the fastest one out there.

It is interesting that Apple is pushing the multiple graphics cards so hard in this new machine so that leads me to believe we will see some sort of corolation between the graphics cards and the new Studio package. But until that actually gets released AND we see some benchmark tests, I’m just going to sit on the machines I have right now.

The new fastest Mac Pro spec’d as I would purchase it is over $6,000 so that’s a lot of money to get minimal increases in performance as it stands today.

[Ben Holmes] “Essentially you’re now paying the same for an 8-core 2.26Ghz Nehalem as you were for an 8-core 3.2Ghz previous gen Xeon. That’s 1.4x processor speed difference, so if the benchmarks are around 1.9x faster for the 2.93Ghz Nehalem compared to the 3.2Ghz Xeon, the cost/speed difference is a lot lower than it appears, if you follow me. “

That’s wrong Ben. The Nehalem processors are a completely new architecture that completely eliminates the front side bus and the bottleneck it created between the RAM and the processors. The new “direct connect” architecture speeds up everything in the computer, essentially creating an overall boost of about 30% with proc clock speeds the same or even a little lower.

Ah, you added the optional espresso maker to the back, eh? Yeah, that’s a bit expensive, especially with the frothing option. 🙂

I thought the $5,500 I spent on the 3.2 Octo was high. This thing is really priced out there and I’m definitely not lining up to purchase one. We need new video monitors this year and I’m probably going to purchase three 24″ HD LCD displays before I purchase one Mac Pro.

Again, I’ll wait for them to show up refurb before I do any purchasing.

[Aaron Neitz] “No big fanfare because it’s only a mild upgrade on the boxes.”

    Aaron,

Not so… See my message to Ben above about the re-architected processors.

[walter biscardi] “Ah, you added the optional espresso maker to the back, eh?”

    I wish!

It was just the fastest with 16GB of RAM, one drive, a slew of display port adapters, upgraded graphics, wireless, and AppleCare.

Not really asking that much here.

My feeling is these things must be fast.

It’s not a rush out and replace all your Mac Pro’s type of machine, that’s for sure. If you need a new machine now, it’s a nice bump. If your current machines are good, then really no reason to drop $6 to $7,000 for this upgrade.

Yeah, the price goes up quickly with them. They kind of force your hand with RAM since there’s already 6GB in the top one so is it cheaper to replace all of it with 16GB from Crucial or add 10 more from Apple…

I hope they’re fast for the money they’re asking!
