These get pricey went you start upping the processor speeds, like to see FCP rendering speeds.
Please don’t tell my Quad G5 or first gen 8-Core that they are obsolete, they don’t know that yet so they keep on working, heck in fact my G4 867 is still willing to make DLTs for me.

£4,500 for an 8-core 2.93? I think I’ll need to see some FCS benchmarks before I commit the money, as keen as I am to cut HD render times.
Essentially you’re now paying the same for an 8-core 2.26Ghz Nehalem as you were for an 8-core 3.2Ghz previous gen Xeon. That’s 1.4x processor speed difference, so if the benchmarks are around 1.9x faster for the 2.93Ghz Nehalem compared to the 3.2Ghz Xeon, the cost/speed difference is a lot lower than it appears, if you follow me.
I know those new chips are expensive, so it’s not really Apple’s fault – but what’s with Apple’s new policy on RAM? Are they being newly reasonable or ensuring they regain some of the profits going to Crucial et al? Looking forward to seeing a price breakdown as well.
I’m still keen to upgrade one system soon – been waiting a while. Nice to know there’s a higher end solution, at a higher cost…

That means the new graphics cards have only one DVI port. If you want to drive two monitors, you need an adapter to split the signal. Unless you want to run the Apple 24″ LED display. Then you need two graphics cards.

What I find really amusing is that Apple recommends 1GB per Core. So why does the 8 core come with 6GB RAM?

We have a G5 Quad 2.5 still running daily in our third suite. Mac Pro Quad 3.0 running in our 2nd suite and the Octo Core 3.2 running in my suite. All working just fine.
Without any clue as to what (if anything) a new Final Cut Pro will require, seems no reason for me to do any updating on the computers right now.
Wait about 3 months and these machines will start showing up refurb on the Apple Store, then I’ll consider buying one if I need something.

So they can sell you the extra 2Gb as an extra! Why else do this – at one swoop they have ensured you won’t scrap the 2Gb in the machine and buy elsewhere, if you want matching RAM. I’m just trying to figure out if it’s a good deal – and I guess that depends on the processor costs.
I also see from the usual websites the standard keyboard has had the number keys removed (and the middle section as well) although I gather there’s a no-cost option to have the old one somewhere. I’ve got about 4 of them cluttering my desk, so a small one for non-edit work is fine by me…

I do not want one. For once I am happy with the computer I bought a year ago. I’ll take the old MacPro to the new one any day of the week. Actually, when the first MacBook Pros came out they lacked FW800 and PCMCIA…so I was VERY happy to have bought my Powerbook G4. Worked with P2 (still does) and was still able to connect to my G-Raids.
The new Mac Pros look like Apple Marketting trying to make sure that we buy ONLY Apple equipment. And this is a STUPID stupid move.
A graphics card that has ONE DVI and ONE of those new connectors for the new Apple LCD monitor. But since the new LCD monitors ONLY have this connector, you cannot get TWO of them. Only one. Then you must get another monitor for the other port. Forget the colors matching then.
Oh, but you can add another graphics card if you want two DVI ports. Except that (as Walter pointed out) FCP doesn’t like two graphics cards, Color doesn’t like two graphics cards, and then you lose a PCIe slot (also as Walter pointed out).
I think this is a bad move on Apple’s part, and proof that their marketting department has it’s hands in the design process. “Ooo…make it so they MUST buy the Apple monitor, just like we did with the MacBook Pro. We are tired of losing business to Dell and Samsung in this area.”
Until I am proven wrong. But my initial impression is a bad one.

which is good because we just upgraded 2 G5 stations to 8 cores not more than 4 weeks ago 🙂
initially the i7 chip won’t seem faster at all. from what I understand it’s more optimized for processing large amounts of math: i.e. it’ll render HD video like gangbusters. But until Apple optimizes FCP for modern processors and multi-core I don’t think you’ll see much improvement in FCP.
Heck once multi-core aware FCP comes, all our MacPro’s will get a big boost of new life.
that stupid Display Port reminds me of the ADC days. Ugh.

I think you could say the same thing about the RAM. A classic Apple ploy to regain some marketshare.
