[walter biscardi] “What I find really amusing is that Apple recommends 1GB per Core. So why does the 8 core come with 6GB RAM?”

The new architecture uses a three channel memory bust instead of dual-channel. So memory should be configured in increments of 3 (3GB, 6GB, 9GB, etc.)

I have a Mac I am considering selling. I live in Sydney, Australia. The Mac is about 8 months old. Hardly been used with Premier and Final Cut and all the other stuff.
    Anyone in Oz interested?

Does this mean Sony and others will switch to firewire 800
    for cameras and decks?

After looking at Apple’s own performance comparisons for Video between the new 8-core 2.9 vs the 8- 3.2 with only minimal gain I can’t see how they can justify the huge spike in price for the top dawg machine. Hopefully this means a totally revamped FCS3 coming soon (April). The video market has got to be their biggest market for Mac Pros.

[Ben Holmes] “A little research shows that the 2.26Ghz Xeon sells for around $500 and the 2.93Ghz for around $1600. That’s volume pricing by the way.”

That’s insane. Maybe someone will figure out how to overclock these.

    Hi
    Yes – Intel…

Power when (and where) you need it.
The new Mac Pro introduces Turbo Boost: a dynamic performance technology that automatically boosts the processor clock speed based on workload. If you’re using an application that doesn’t need every core, Turbo Boost shuts off the idle cores while simultaneously increasing the speed of the active ones, up to 3.33GHz on a 2.93GHz Mac Pro.

The same 113% Turbo boost to a 2.26GHz CPU would bring it up to nearly 2.6GHz…

I’m talking about making the Mac think the 2.26ghz is actually a 3.2ghz chip. They’re all the same die and come off the same line. Some are just QC’d to run at the higher rates. So it’s frustrating to see such a large price gap.

[Sean Donnelly] “Even though apple seems to prefer ATI, the quadro adds a LOT of processing power. “

Not the case with Apple’s Pro Apps. 3D apps, yes, but Apple software, no. Their OpenGL driver performance is much more optimized for the ATI cards than nVidia. For Color and Motion, the ATI card will provide better performance than a Quadro. Strange but true.

I think most people doing hardcore 3D are using Windows PCs due to the much stronger and broader support for high end OpenGL graphics cards and application-specific drivers. Also factor into that equation the unavailability of certain powerhouse 3D and CAD apps (3dsMax, AutoCAD).

It’s obvious that Apple doesn’t have any real interest in pursuing the high end 3D market. They’ve been offering anemic graphics cards and/or drivers for years, and despite the constant outraged complaints of 3D pros, the situation hasn’t improved.
