February 15, 2024 at 12:59 pmHi Doug,
You are the man!!
Not sure if it will help, but I want to tell you my goal with the project. Originally, I sliced up my interviews, dumping thematically similar clips on timelines. Hence all those themed folders. Some themes were then edited much tighter. It’s these unrefined but categorised timelines I want to use as the starting point as I rekindle this project.
Hope this isn’t turning into too much of a headache for you.
Tim
PS Is it just me, or is it kind of preposterous that an ‘old project import tool’ is not part of fcpx? I ran a post house for more than ten years and we frequently had clients wanting to update older projects.

February 15, 2024 at 6:20 pmHey Tim,
It’s been interesting so far. I’ve attached a FCP Library file with the first batch of timelines, plus an Event with just the footage (keywords = bins) which I exported after removing all the sequences.
Crack it open and see what you can relink vs. what can’t / doesn’t. I’ll pause the translations until we confirm you can actually relink your media.
I agree that it is totally bananas not having a translation tool outside of FCP7!

Wow, I don’t know how you did it but it is working almost perfectly!!!! Hundreds and hundreds of clips and edits and bins etc are all there, relinked and ready to go. In total only 8 files cannot be relinked alegedly because, “frame rates don’t match”. I’m sure I can easily work through this problem.
So, when you have time, please go ahead and knock out the balance of the project using your mysterious yet highly effective alchemy.
I can’t begin to tell how much this means to me. Thank you so very much.

February 27, 2024 at 10:54 amG’day Doug,
Thank you, thank you, thank you. This rather ungainly project of mine is up and running!! You’ve saved me weeks and weeks of work. You are a valuable asset to this community.
There are still five takes that refuse to let me relink them, citing frame rate incompatibility. Other takes that were shot immediately before and after on the same camera relink just fine. I can’t find a work around and don’t know of a force relink function. Can you point me in the direction of how to get these five takes back in the game?
Cheers,
Tim
PS lemme know how I can sling some bickies your way.

February 27, 2024 at 3:57 pmHey Tim!
Found something interesting. For each of those 5 clips, I did find a discrepancy in the instances – one shows as 24fps, while the rest with the same parent show 23.98… assuming they all should be the latter.
I’d be inclined to highlight the instances with the correct frame rate and try to relink those first. I’m going through projects now to see if those outliers are connected to the same timeline or have some other common link:

May 2, 2024 at 5:54 pmHi everyone!
This has been an incredibly helpful thread. Thank you!
Doug, I work for an education agency that created a DVD series for our state department of education a while back in 2009, and our video editor at the time created the series in FCP 7. Of course, the project director now wants to be able to access and update all those sequences for a revised video release. We have the archived FCP 7 files and associated media, but no way to open and reconnect the hundreds of files. Would you happen to have time to chat with me to see if we might hire you to resurrect or salvage what we can of the old files? Many thanks! Sara

I’d be glad to help. How might I get in touch? I thought we had a DM feature here, but apparently not…
