It has been a very long time since I’ve had access to this edit, so I don’t remember exactly how it was organized in there. Hopefully it is not too complicated, but if it is, please let me know and I can likely narrow it down based on what you see. My guess is the timeline I’ll need is just the most recent one or two.
Thanks again, Doug, you rock!

January 31, 2024 at 4:29 pmHey Adam,
True story – only 2 timelines in that project, and both are empty.
I’ve included the .fcpxml for import to FCPX, the original .xml export, a batch list, and a few screenshots of the FCP7 project.

January 31, 2024 at 5:22 pmHey Doug,
Thank you so much for taking the time to do this!
At least I still have the raw footage, and the batch list helped me confirm this.
Guess the original edit is lost to time somewhere. Maybe one day it will turn up.
Thanks again! Hopefully one day I will be able to return the favour 🙂

There is a chance the edit still lives – if you have access to the originating machine or a backup, there would have been an ‘Autosave Vault’ folder in the Final Cut Pro Documents folder…

February 6, 2024 at 2:43 pmHi Doug, I have exactly the same problem. I think my project is quite large. I’d be happy to pay you for your time if you were able to help me. I quit the film and tv biz 12 years ago and have just got a new laptop, ready to dive in again.
Cheers,
Tim

February 6, 2024 at 3:48 pmOh man if this is a common issue, then its time for me to fire up the old cheese grater 🙂
Wish me luck!

February 6, 2024 at 4:00 pmSure, Tim!
I don’t need the media, just the project file(s). I’ve had really good success with small/medium-sized projects, but the bigger ones haven’t been quite as consistent. Won’t really know until I open it and see.
@ Eric Santiago – Good luck! I’ve got an OWC SSD on a PCI card for my boot disk, and a 3-disk RAID internal. I don’t put it on the network, and only boot it when needed. It’s been a really solid cheese grater for me going on 15 years.

February 13, 2024 at 6:03 pmG’day Doug,
It’s taken me a few days to find the right project file. This is a fairly massive project with many, many timelines. I’m assuming you work one timeline at a time rather than somehow converting the entire project. From memory, the project is divided into a series of themes, maybe 30 in total. I will eventually need the latest edit from each of these folders. Could you please first have a look and maybe try just one timeline and we’ll see how it goes.
I was full time in TV and Film Post production in Australia until I moved to Germany about 10 years ago. I am now back into it with a new computer and FCPX – it has changed a bit!!! This project will be a big documentary/video installation. It is comprised of fragments of about 300 interviews with people from each of the 50 states of the US taken in 2008 and 2009.
Your help is soooo appreciated.

Pls let me know if the link doesn’t work.

I’m able to open the project and individual timelines just fine. There are 3 ‘EDIT’ bins, each with 70+ themes, and some of those themes have subs too. It seems there was a main EDIT folder to start, and over time it was duplicated a couple of times, though I’m not sure what’s different between them.
When possible, I export XML of the entire project at once. With this one, unfortunately, export repeatedly fails due to ‘critical XML error’. I’ve tried thinning things down to get a bulk export, but anything other than a single timeline produces the error. That said, I am able to export individual timeline XML and am in the process of exporting the latest timeline from each theme bin.
Once I’ve got those out, I’ll convert and bring them into a FCPX library and see what’s what.
