Walter you need to do it with RS422. I know about the firewire thing but you do know that any tape edits via firewire is just a well timed crash record?
Firewire does not support true edit commands like assemble and insert edit.

If you can make it via RS422 then yes it seems I may have made a mistake. But if it is only firewire, then it is no different than any other firwire decks.

[JeremyG] “I’ll add in 10 bucks to double it. $20 anyone? Has to be HD-SDI in and RS-422 deck control. I know it can do the weird firewire 7 frame preroll edit.”

Well, here’s what i have working here with my deck:

Firewire DVCPro HD Control > Firewire Input to the Deck: Edit to Tape works perfectly.

Firewire DVCPro HD Control > HD-SDI Input to the Deck: Edit to Tape works perfectly.

RS-422 Control > any input: Edit to Tape does not work. In fact, this morning FCP simply crashes everytime I launch with RS-422 selected as the control device.

So RS-422 works fine for capture, but it appears that Firewire DVCPro HD control is the only control setting that works with Edit to Tape right now on the 1200A. I’m going to contact my Panasonic Rep to see if there will be any kind of firmware update that will allow Edit to Tape to function with RS-422.

[Walter Biscardi] “I’ve not had any issues every in the past doing an Assemble edit to my 1200A either via Firewire control (which I’m testing now) or using RS-422 Control.”

Let me correct this statement Bob. I’ve just run more tests down here and RS-422 Control does not work for “Edit to Tape.” It is a Playback only control. I have just sent off an email to my Panasonic Rep to find out if Panasonic plans to release a Firmware Update for RS-422 control during recording.

Just heard back from Panasonic and the answer is the 1200A only has one set of electronics so there is no RS-422 Editing capabilities. Don’t ask me what that means “one set of electronics” because he didn’t eleborate. So it’s crash record only unless you use Firewire Control from Final Cut Pro to do an Assemble Edit. But there are absolutely no Insert editing capabilities.

So I’ve just run off RS-422 to capture from the deck, but obviously, I was in Firewire control when laying back.
