Do you own the deck too?

No, I do not own one Walter, however I get to work with them on a daily basis, and it also helps that I am the FCP / Post training part HD Expo’s VariCamp classes on the use of a Varicam and the in’s and outs of the DVCPROHD workflow, using both FW and HDSDI.

So I get time to talk to the people that create these cool toys, nothing more.

Interesting note from the Panasonic brochure:

The AJ-HD1200A can play back or record* up to 92 minutes of superiorquality HD footage on a single, compact 1/4″ DVCPRO HD L cassette (AJ-HP92ELG). *The AJ-HD1200A can record only when an optional board is mounted. Recording via HD-SDI (optional)

Add the optional AJ-YA120AG HD-SDI in/out and SD-SDI out board, and the AJ-HD1200A can provide HD recording (1080/59.94i, 1080/50i, or 720/59.94p) from HD-SDI input.

So according to their own brochure, you must have the HD-SDI board installed for recording to work on the deck. I have both the Firewire and HD-SDI boards on my machine so Edit to Tape works perfectly. If I’m reading this right, if don’t have the HD-SDI board installed on the deck, it’s a player only.

Did you get this to work, Bob? I have not with RS-422 control, only firewire control. A quote from Pg. 13 of the 1200a operating instructions talking about the RS-422 interface:

“The connector satisfies the RS-422A interface standard, but no editing-related functions are operational.”

How do you get it to work Walter? Do tell.

Thank you Walter, and it’s always funny to see how a simple question gets twisted around, as the number of threads increase.

The only issue here is my LACK OF KNOWLEGE, and the operator error that I (and the editor) are doing with the FCP HD and AJ-HD1200A. The HD Option IS
installed in the VTR, and everything works fine EXCEPT “Assemble – Edit to Tape”. And obviously, since Walter is doing it right now, I am doing something stupid and incorrect (operator error), and on Monday, I will go back and try again (using weevie’s tips). The ONLY reason I questioned this is because we tried the exact process with an SD project using a Sony DVW-A500, and there were no issues in doing the Assemble Edit to Tape. But obviously, we are doing something stupid.

Thanks for clearing this up Walter.

Pretty sure I just select Panasonic DVCPro HD RS-422 and off it goes.

Will the real slim shady please stand up!!!

The subject of assembling editing via the 1200A has lead to massive confusion and multiple stories.

So who is right? Steve Mahrer from Panasonic stated on the Varicam forum that no editing is possible the 1200A. But Walter has stated it can be done. Bob can’t be stupid in his quest to seek the truth regarding this mystery.

So who and what configuration makes one 1200A not work and the other work.

To settle this matter I am now offering a ten dollar reward to anyone who can prove the 1200A can do an assemble edit. You must supply the specific menu settings as well as hardware options required.

    Thanks to all,

    Tony Salgado

Tony, I have the 1200A fully loaded with the Firewire and HD-SDI Options. Via Firewire control on Saturday (and in the past) I simply use the Kona 2 Easy Setup for DVCPro HD 59.94. Then switch deck control over to Firewire DVCPRo HD.

I’m going to test the RS-422 setup later to see if I really have edited to tape using that setting or just used that to capture and then Firewire control to edit back out to tape.

I’ll add in 10 bucks to double it. $20 anyone? Has to be HD-SDI in and RS-422 deck control. I know it can do the weird firewire 7 frame preroll edit.
