  • Is it normal to have 10 frames of latency on the monitoring output ?

Posted by Michael Cinquin on December 6, 2010 at 2:01 pm

    Hi

The Davinci adds an additional 10 frames to my video monitoring latency. That computes to .4 seconds in PAL land. It’s a lot, because when I change a grade the davinci is always .4 seconds late. I would like to know if this is expected behavior and what fellow users are getting.

It’s easy to do the test : just use a video that has timecode in it, and take a picture at 50fps (or 60fps in US) of both your UI and your external display (you may find leaders with timecode burnt in here https://www.charbon-studio.be/telechargements : the page is in French ; the section is “bandes amorces”).

Here are the tests I’ve done :

    1. Determine the normal latency of my video monitoring system in FCP using the blackmagic video card : 5 frames

    2. Determine the latency in DaVinci : 12 frames

I have tried everything I could think of :
    PAL, 1080i50, 1080i59.95 1080i60 material and/or video output
    prores hq, prores 444, dpxs

The results are very consistent, also accross reboots, and very consistent too with the feeling that the monitoring is sluggish. When I press the spacebar to stop playing, the monitoring keeps on rolling for quite some time (not on the ui).

Is there any vodoo command I could run, that would reduce DaVinci internal buffer ? It does not matter if real-time capabilities are a bit lowered, as long as the DaVinci’s monitoring is more responsive !

    thanks

    Here are my specs :
    12 core @2.66 GHZ
    24 GB RAM
10.6.5 and Davinci 7.0.3 (but the latency was a problem also in past versions of OS.X and Davinci)
    Blackmagic Extreme 3D
Monitoring : hdmi output of Extreme 3D goes straight into the projector (in the past with Aja I converted the sdi output of the Kona to hdmi using Blackmagic Broadcast Converter, and I only had 2 frames of latency in Final Cut Pro)
    Blackmagic Output processing : off
    Videos cards : gt120 and gtx285

For playback, yes, I’m getting some delay from I press play or stop until something actually happens. As for normal use – adjusting the colors in frame, I can’t see I have much delay. Might be some, but not critical.

I’ve got consistent latency between the video-out and the onscreen GUI, it’s normal. Regarding transport controls, I find the keyboard has a lot more latency then the transport controls on the Wave. Practically speaking, hitting the spacebar to stop playback takes a second and a half, while pressing the “stop” button on my Wave is much more responsive (still lags a bit).

Alexis is the job/shuttle on your Wave usable with Resolve? I ask because our is not…….it seems as if every revolution of the jog wheel is about a frame and it stutters and get’s stuck.

    Best,

Here 1 revolution of the shuttle +- = 1 second ; I could do with a fast mode when pressing Alt.

I’m surprised that people seem at ease with such a high latency. If it happened only during playback, I couldn’t care less.

But when I grade (using the wave or the UI), I would really much prefer the davinci+motoring to be more responsive : grading is made of lots of fine adjustments, and I would much prefer to see at once the effect of each one of them.

    Salut Michael,

Yes it is normal on both the linux and mac versions…
There is a delay on the sdi and hdmi outputs during playback. I configure my application to not display a picture on the gui only the tools and nodes..

This forces me to look at my sdi or hdmi (calibrated) outputs and not look at the gui when making color changes.. If i need to draw a detailed shape or do some tracking work I go to the view page..

Yes this is normal and has always been like this. The GUI display is used primarily as a reference for creating/positioning shapes, qualifying and tracking. The SDI output should always be used for actual video playback reference.

Can Resolve be configured to not display picture on the GUI?

Yes right click in the node area and chose toggle display mode.
