i invite discusion: does apple know about these “issues”

People can argue over what the best way is until the cows come home. But adding more options in the User Preferences to allow the individual the choice doesn’t hurt anyone. This is a pro application. They should never be concerned with having too many options in the prefences for fear that it may look too intimidating.

There is too much bull in this tread to deal with all of it but I’ve done a few successful insert edits from FCP. Starting with version 1.2.5

It’s true, there does seem to be altogether too much passion about some of this stuff. I don’t want to add to the pile; can you please tell me the hardware setup, ie Mac system, OS version, FCP version, and I/O and hardware card that would allow me to do a frame accurate insert edit into a Betacam SP VTR.

Actually it doesn’t matter. Any IO hardware with any serial port works.

WHAT KEY STROKEs WOULD IT ADD. NONE!!! I ony have two word to say EDIT* and Lightworks both have the out as and out. Not one frame later. They are also the two best editing systems I have ever cut on. I have worn out my arrow back key!!!

I’m not sure you’d find too many people who would agree with you Sean. There is always a balance to be struck between customisability and complexity and I reckon FCP has it about right at the moment.

Having said that…just one more option won’t hurt and I would totally agree that the Change Speed window could benefit from a “Lock to current sequence duration” button. In the 3 years I’ve been editing on FCP, I can’t think of a single time where I’ve wanted to lock the source in/out and have the sequence out ripple when I change a clip’s speed.

I can’t accept that argument. How about one more option called an “Advanced Settings” button that has a whole list of custom settings? If you don’t want to click on it, don’t.

I’m with ya 100% with the out point thing! It’s my #1 pet-peeve of all software in the entire world! If I ever meet Steve Jobs it’s going to be the first thing I complain about!

I’ve had this discussion several times here and elsewhere and other than the odd FCP zealot whose ego can’t tolerate even the discussion of potential change, most users see the value of what you (and I ) are describing and hate constantly banging back one frame to set an outpoint.

One of the problems with the issue is that it’s very difficult to describe in words, yet the resolution is quite simple. The best way I have come up with to describe it is that the CUT should always be placed where the CURSOR is. This avoids the circular discussion about which frame on which side of the cursor should show in the viewer and why you would or would not want that. It should also avoid getting into old “obsolete” tape editing (3 point editing anyone?) and/or film editing (which is irrelevant because the Moviola doesn’t determine where the grease pencil goes.)

The in or out CUT should always be placed where the CURSOR is. It
