One more detail with the Pacifist solution. Toss Quicktime Player in the trash before installing. You only need to delete the application – don’t worry about prefs and whatnot. Also, very important, make very sure you unlock and then check the administrator box, or nothing good happens.

Ok, So i’ve installed qt 7.3 using pacifist. when suddenly a quicktime .mov I was able to see last week is telling me that “I may need additional software” to open this quicktime. The only variable that has changed is the quicktime dilemma/craziness (upgrade to 7.4, downgrade to 7.3). My client is working in fcp, but as I said, I haven’t had any problems with the same file before. Anyone have any idea how to fix this???????????

So it was a black magic plug in. I forgot that I had downloaded that codec long ago. In case anyone needs this, you can download a mac version here:

Apple’s latest Quicktime update 7.4.1 did work for me. I was also getting the message “After Effects error: opening movie – you do not have permission to open this file (-54)” after 10 minutes of rendering, but after updating to version 7.4.1 I can now render my entire movie and no errors after the 10 minute mark.

I am working on an iMac with Leopard installed. I would suggest those who have downgraded to version 7.3 to stick with their setup until they see more feedback about 7.4.1. For those who haven’t downgraded and are stuck at 7.4, I would definitely recommend trying the latest upgrade before they downgrade.

Maybe I failed to read all, but is this problem affecting PCs as well?

    Hey,

I have just downloaded and installed QT 7.4.1, rendering as i type, at the moment i am at the 14 minute mark and it hasn’t crashed as of yet, looking good so far. (fingers crossed).

I’ll let you know if anything goes wrong with it, but otherwise, i shall also recommend this to people who haven’t downgraded yet.

it’s friday and i am now that little bit happier. 😀
