Upgrade to 7.4.1 it solved the problem for me, it certainly stressed me out last week for the same reason!

So this thread died out…. can anyone else please confirm that QT 7.4.1 on OS X is safe with AE8.

After Effect has major problems if you upgrade QT. To be safe, stay with 7.31 (maybe 7.4) I have had problems rendering and recently, this week even booting AE. My QT was upgraded by someone in our shop trying to be kind. If you have upgraded and are experiencing problems do this:

    1. download QT 7.31 package
    2. download Pacifist software.
    3. Use Pacifist to install (basically overwrite) QT 7.5 or whatever you have upgraded to.
    4. Contact Apple and bitch them out.

This sounded promising—I tried that, but still am getting red exclamation marks on all my drives. Message “you can’t install QT on this volume- is downgrade”

Was there another step after this?

    Hello from Italy!

Remove the Hear plugin on OSX
    /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL/Hear.plugin
Now Af and Prm work fine. No more “Initializing Mediacore..

    best regards
    massimo
