  • A few questions from Final Cut editor new to PP

Posted by Bill Thomas on October 22, 2013 at 5:20 pm

    Hi all,

I come from FCP where I was very comfortable with a few specific commands that I can’t seem to find in PP CS5. Perhaps some of you can help me!

    1. How can I get the playhead to snap to an edit or beginning or end of clip? When I have SNAP enabled, my clips will snap to each other but the playhead won’t snap to a clip (similar to the N command in FCP).

    2. Is there an easy way to view the whole timeline in one click? (Similar to Shift-Z in FCP)

    3. To zoom in and out of the timeline, I now use Option-Mousewheel. Is there another way that’s strictly a keyboard command?

    4. I’m on CS5. Any way to save my favorite transitions?

    5. When moving a clip in the timeline Vertically to another track, is there a way to make sure it goes perfectly vertical and I don’t knock it off a few frames while dragging it? (Shift-drag was the command in FCP)

    Thanks everyone!

    Bill

    Hi Bill,
CS5 is a number of versions in the past. You’ll find the more current you go with Premiere Pro, the more FCP like behaviors you’ll find.

[Bill Thomas] “1. How can I get the playhead to snap to an edit or beginning or end of clip? When I have SNAP enabled, my clips will snap to each other but the playhead won’t snap to a clip (similar to the N command in FCP).”

Try Shift + drag with snapping enabled.

[Bill Thomas] “2. Is there an easy way to view the whole timeline in one click? (Similar to Shift-Z in FCP)”

    Try the back slash key.

[Bill Thomas] “3. To zoom in and out of the timeline, I now use Option-Mousewheel. Is there another way that’s strictly a keyboard command?”

    Try the + key.

[Bill Thomas] “4. I’m on CS5. Any way to save my favorite transitions?”

You can save the default transition only: https://help.adobe.com/en_US/premierepro/cs/using/WS40C519D9-F6AF-431f-B36E-C143208921A0.html

[Bill Thomas] “5. When moving a clip in the timeline Vertically to another track, is there a way to make sure it goes perfectly vertical and I don’t knock it off a few frames while dragging it? (Shift-drag was the command in FCP)”

Just drag it, you don’t need the Shift key. Tool tip should verify that.

    Hope that helps.

    Thanks,
    Kevin

They need to add something like the shift key. If snapping isn’t enabled, it can float all over the place.

    I’ll add to that list-

Is there a way to copy-drag a transition to another edit point? In FCP I can option+drag a transition to another edit point and get a copy of it. Plus, depending on where I drop it, it’s a start on edit, center on edit, or end on edit. As well, after the fact I can right click on a transition and choose start on edit, end on edit or center on edit. I can’t even seem to figure out how to copy and paste a transition in PP.

    Hi Bret,
Feel free to make a feature request for that: https://www.adobe.com/go/wish
In the mean time, enable snapping or just use the Option + Up arrow shortcut to nudge a clip to the next track if you are on Premiere Pro CC.

    Thanks,
    Kevin

[Bret Williams] “Is there a way to copy-drag a transition to another edit point?”

    Hi Bret,
No, copy/paste works just fine, though. If you want to copy transitions by Option dragging, make a request.

[Bret Williams] “depending on where I drop it, it’s a start on edit, center on edit, or end on edit.”

Dragging from the Effects tab, you can do that. You can also open a transition and change it to start, end, or be centered on the cut. If you want to Option drag to a new cut and place it on the start or end of a cut, make a request.

[Bret Williams] “I can’t even seem to figure out how to copy and paste a transition in PP.”

Make sure the track is selected for the clip you want to paste to.

    Hope that helps,
    Kevin

Copy and paste should have nothing to do with track assignments. Even after you told me it could be copied and pasted I still had to take time to figure it out. Apparently it only will paste to where the playhead is, if the track is enabled. More lessons from 7. Copy the transition, highlight the transition spot you want to paste to. Paste. No worries about playhead (perhaps you’d like to keep the playhead where it is) no worries about track patching (maybe you’d like them to stay where they are too for 3 point editing purposes).

And option+drag to copy, shouldn’t this work by default? It’s a basic function of the operating system on macs and windows. It works with clips, it should work with dissolves.

Going to the effects tab will give you the standard. Say you just created a 3 frame dissolve. You want to apply it to the same spot various cuts all around that area. Hold option an drag drag drag. Done. It’d be nice.

And start/end/center on cut needs to be a simple right click menu choice. There’s hardly anything in that menu. Duration and delete I think. Having to go up to the effect controls for this is too much. But I did discover that when you drag a dissolve from the effects tab you can choose start, center, or end just by where you drag it. That’s great. But who applies a dissolve from the effects tab?

Where is the request link? Can’t find it in the help menu or on the PP support center.

Sorry these items are not working the way you want them to. The feature request form is here: https://www.adobe.com/go/wish

I can copy and paste transitions all over the timeline regardless where the playhead is. Select any edit, anywhere and paste or add default transition whether the track is selected or not. Select all the tracks you want to effect and by using the up/down arrows you jump to each edit point and paste. I get that there’s no option dragging to copy, but I don’t get why just copy once/paste as needed isn’t a better solution.
