    Chris-
    If you dont mind…
Try quickly previewing odd file formats from an external drive.
IE: mpg1 then low-res quicktime then Stills of odd format.

Keep asking it to preview before its ready to. Hurry it along I guess to tax/stress the encoders on preview.
I would be showing someone pics/bakgnd options successively resulting in a freeze. I now feel that I have to undo EXT-PREV to save face and humility.

I have some motion backgrounds on external LaCie drive that will crash upon preview but NOT if I take them directly to the trimmer or to the timeline.
Once they’re on any timline they’ll play OK.

    Donna-
The sound card plays no part in the “RIP”
First verify if its a soundcard issue.
IE: record from a microphone and play it back.
Is this a “garbling” at all or just glitches, skips, and pops

Is the CD-rom (whatever the drive is that your ripping from)brand new as well??.
    Did it ever work ??
Does It play OK in real time.
Did you (can you try another drive in that new computer ??
there is a chance that she cant rip properly.

I have an older cd-rom that had limitations on its read speed and another that got dirt on the lazer.
The CD-rom specs told the computer that a full speed “RIP” was do-able but in actuality it couldnt rip it fast enough. Same with the dirty lens… it starts to pull the data but resamples too many times due to a bad/dirty read so the ROM buffer runs out and you’ll get glitches and errors.

    Try this.
    Preferances/CD settings/ extract optimization.
set the fader all the way to the left. click OK then RIP a song.
    test for glitches.

    Good luck
    look forward to your results

    Edward.
In referance to why some players played in sync and others not. !
I originally had the project as a “single movie”.
Some players synced and others didnt. I made a bold assumption that maybe upon Disc “boot up” maybe some “cheaper chipset” players might not read and initialize instantly both files.
The sync offset was several frames.
IE: drumstick is coming away from snare when you hear the hit.

So I made a basic “menu” project thinking that the player would have a chance to boot up and recognize a file before a “command to play” was issued.

Results showed that the files now play in sync on all the players now.
This is a test of seven random brand standalone players.

    Any thoughts ??
I really dont have any technical proof to backup this observation only results.

Other than that ..the audio level issue has been rectified .

    Thanks for the insight.
The “out of sync” DVD players happen to be of similar make and model and have been behaving weirdly since day one …so I’ll chalk it up as “bad product chipset”

PS: the new Vegas-ized DVD audio conversion technique was a success. !!

    Edward-
I have been following your great insight for a long time.
Now I finally have the pleasure of your help.

    I read your newsletter link.
For some reason I dont remember setting those from Vegas in the past..Is there not another way from inside DVDA ?

If not then I’ll do the conversion in Vegas.

Any thoughts on the random Sync issue I mentioned in the earlier
    post
