Simply saying its for school does not mean you can do anything you want with it. Fair use allows in education allows it to be used as part of a lesson https://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl102.html. That does not mean it can be edited and modified. Shane has clearly stated he plans on editing it. Thats not fair use.

Shane your “fair use” excuse doe NOT work. Fair use lets you show segments, it does not allow for copy or edit the original material.

The Cow does NOT condone breaking copyright. A quick search will shoe you many posts by the forum leaders about the subject.
For some one who wants to do video production you should care about copyright. If you spent a lot of time creating a unique production im sure you would not be pleased if someone else started messing with it with out your permission.

USB works in bursts of data, therefore it has problems keeping up with the constant data rates needed for video editing.

I hate to break it to you but DVD players do NOT play HD DVDs or Blue Ray DVDs. Like I said the HD DVD Format is dead so if you want a HD video on disk it is going to have to be BlueRay. But keep in mind the majority of people out there do not have a BlueRay player just regular DVD players.

You contact the studio that owns the copyright, and pay what ever fee they require to use their copyrighted material. They should then be able to provide you that material in a format that is suitable for editing..

What kind of drive/s are you using for your media drive? How is it connected? And how is if formated?

Well I believe the Mac OS does a basic check on all hard drives connected when started up. A hard drive that has issues could slow that whole disk check process down.

Your camera records video in h.264 which is NOT a editing codec. You need to convert it to a proper editing codec. Search the Cow on this you will find plenty of info.
As for DVD SP, it will NOT make a HD DVD that will play in your standard DVD player. The HD DVD for mat LOST the war between HD DVD and Blue Ray. The only place you will be able to play a HD disk made in DVD SP will be on a mac or on some old HD DVD players that are no longer sold.
You can however make a a SD DVD in DVD SP, and agin there is plenty of info here on the Cow as to how to do properly do that.

I hate to break it to you but whoever is trying to sell you that computer is full of it. That computer is imaginary. A computer cannot have both a G5 processor and a Intel processor. They are completely different. Its ether a G5 Power PC or a Intel Mac Pro.
If it is a G5 then in my opinion I would NOT invest in it. You would be limiting yourself and will not be able to run current versions of FCP or Mac OS.
