Apple pulling out of NAB was a pretty sure sign that they wouldn’t have much to show this year. Point upgrades to add support for other companies’ new products are pretty much all I’ve seen.

I think FCP has been spit ‘n polished up about as much as it can be without getting into rewrite territory. I know nothing about programming, but it sounds like moving past some core weaknesses is going to be a real feat. I’m sure it’ll happen… maybe by next year. I see nothing wrong with every two years for major upgrades to pro apps. Otherwise you barely figure out the quirks before you upgrade again.

    My 2 cents,

April 12, 2008 at 2:29 pm in reply to: NEW Apple HDV 1.4 codec

[Andy Mees] “Sony’s new PDW-F700 shoots to MPEG HD 4.2.2 – a 50 Mb/s VBR variant of the original 25 Mb/s CBR HDV standard.”

That’s interesting… simplest explanation is usually the right one. I hadn’t heard about a new variant of HDV. I’ll check out that new camera, but depending on the price, I don’t know that I get the point or understand why this has a place in the product line. It would seem strange to potentially lessen the value of the EX1 as a sort of high-end HDV camera so soon after the launch.

So I’m glad to know that I’m not the only one reading release notes on a Friday night.

This one line in the notes has me really curious since I work with HDV all the time. Does this mean graphics rendered in HDV sequences will suddenly be “better”? Does it also mean that you’ll now be losing visual information by outputting an HDV sequence to tape?

Walter is probably right that this just involves some on-the-fly format conversion or something. But right now I just don’t “get” what this means, if anything, or any impact this may have on now-standard HDV workflows. Does this replace the render HDV to ProRes option?

Atom (Is that really your first name… that’s pretty awesome,

I have a feeling an honest conversation about this topic could get pretty heated, so I’ll try to tread softy.

When I read your post, I got the impression that you were concerned about churches falling into a trap by following popular marketing techniques du jour rather than just being authentic and using marketing to hone and project the message. I think I misread your post.

It’s hard to judge the value of your content since there effectively isn’t any. There’s just a sales page for a product people have no way gauge the merits of. Try posting bits of your content in the form of blog posts so that people can see what they would be getting, or at least get a little something for free. This might give visitors reason to stay longer the time it takes to realize there’s no way to turn off the music.

    My 2 cents,

March 28, 2008 at 3:13 pm in reply to: Matrox MXO for color correction and color grading

    Shane,

I’ve had this question for a while, but just haven’t asked it…

With the MXO, did you add a second graphics card, or do you just give up one of your monitors while you’re grading?

I’m working on a 30″ next a 23″ ACD and I end up using all of the real estate I have, if even just to keep mail, itunes, and some finder windows open on the 23″. I suppose I wouldn’t miss them while I was working and they might distract me less.

You can still use a 23″ hooked to an MXO as a computer monitor, right? If so, does it switch like a monitor hooked to a decklink card as you turn preview on/off or switch to an app that isn’t sending out video?

    Thanks,
    Zak

March 28, 2008 at 3:04 pm in reply to: EX1 backup

    Jonny,

All you have to do is drag the BPAV folder from the card into a folder on the drive. If you want it on two drives just copy to both drives. This will obviously increase the amount of time a card is out of commission for backup. You could also find some utility ( which automatically backs one drive up to the other as it’s modified using watch folders or some such thing.

The transfer software won’t accept the BPAV folder on its own… it has to be wrapped in another folder (or the card’s volume). This actually helps keep track of the cards and it forces you to organize and avoids accidentally overwriting a backup from another card. Make a “card backup” folder and inside that make a new folder with a more descriptive name for each card you copy to disk, the dump the BPAV folder from the card into this folder. (e.g. card backup > 3-24 Client 01 > BPAV)

Then just add each of the folders in card backup as sources in the transfer app.

March 25, 2008 at 4:49 pm in reply to: Sony EX1 and FCP 5: confirm incompatibility

    Trevor,

Just so this is out there… the academic license is for learning, not making money. You can’t update the academic version, and you also can’t legally use it on paying jobs. I bit the bullet after I got out of school and bought a full retail version of FCS. I probably paid for it twice by the time I paid off that credit card (not wise), but I was on the up and up and can go get the cheaper upgrades from here on out.

The release notes for FCP 6.0.2 list XDCAM EX support as a new feature, so there’s your answer.

FCP 5 might play back EX1 footage shot in the SQ codec and transferred with Sony’s software because his footage is essentially HDV, but I can’t remember if this footage appears as HDV or as XDCAM in the browser.

    Hey Scott,

I’m not a business owner… just a rank ‘n file editor, so mine may not be the opinion you’re most interested in. That said, I think the tone an perspective of your posts off based on who you described as your target audience. I think it’s a great blog for production people. I learned some lessons I’ll definitely use if I get unchained from my editing workstation and start doing production again. However, if I were a business I’d want to hear more about why all of this production lingo adds value to my project and less about “the client”… from the perspective of the person you want to reach it felt like I caught you talking about me behind my back. If that makes any sense.

    That’s just my 2 cents,
    Zak

March 21, 2008 at 9:10 pm in reply to: Tracking down an FCP Render Issue

Fair enough… I’ve been staying away from QT 7.4.1 and sticking with 7.4, so maybe that’s why I’m not having the issue. FWIW, I also have a DeckLink HD Extreme rather than a Kona.

That said, FCP 5 (don’t want to spring for the upgrade for my occasional home use) is running just fine on my new iMac at home, and I install every update that pops up on that guy (except the occasional iApp update for the several I never use). So go figure.

    Conan,

Time remap wouldn’t affect those parameters… it sounds like you’re inadvertently keyframing the center and/or anchor points. Double check that neither of those have keyframes and are both set to 0, 0.

Are you adding keyframes by clicking the add keyframe for scale in the motion tab, or by hitting option-k/using the add motion keyframe button in the canvas? The latter adds keyframes to the entire top set of parameters which you may accidentally be changing.
