I’m sorry I cant answer your questions about the EX1 and Premiere Pro. A few weeks ago an Adobe Rep told me Premiere was not compatible with XDCAM and could tell me more about future developments. But now, is it compatible? I don’t really know.

“Did you do a live recording straight from the camera to the computer?”

We tranfered MXF files stored (previously recorded 3 weeks ago) on the SXS cards to the Mac.
We did the same thing three weeks ago with 6 DPs using two budget handheld HD cameras: The Sony XDCAM EX1 and the “old” Pana HVX200 P2 with different gammas and adjustments.

All 6 of them favored the Sony EX1 for 3 main reasons:
    – Low light capabilities (at least a 2 stop difference compared to the Panasonic HVX2OO
    – Much, much more controls and setting. Much more precise.
    – Rotating handgrip and comfort of use.

We have not shot greenscreen footage. So, no keying in post to compare the XCAM 4:2:0 and DVCPRO 4:2:2 signals.

I used the EX1 last week during a training seminar with FCP 6.0.2 and the latest version of XDCAM transfert from Sony (2.0 or something).

Works just fine with USB connection.
    Simply do not use Firewire!

    Hope this may help…

    Tim,

You just don’t need any extra player. Simply plug your F330 or F350 on FAM mode to your NLE with a firewire cable, and you’re done. Faster than real time. As simple as that!
The Sony XDCAM transfert plug-in is required (free) for FCP.

This is the very nature of HD, shooting in low lights conditions yields poor results, as compared to SD.

Using the proper HD lens, may improve your image. And don’t forget, do not use the F330 or F350 right out of the box, but tweak the menus instead, until you get satisfactory results.
You’ll find usefull guidelines on the Sony site called shooting tips:
    https://bssc.sel.sony.com/BroadcastandBusiness/markets/10014/shootingTips.shtml

Issue 07, is probably the first one you’ve got to try. but this is just my opinion.

A Sony rep told me a couple days ago that if FCP 5.1.2 does support 35Mbits HQ, the Sony plug-in does not yet. A new version of the plug-in supporting HQ is on the way.
    Has anyone information on this?

Thanks Dan for the HD Log info and 720/25 or 50 editing!
    Have not tried that yet.

Both 1080/50i and 1080/25P are currently supported with FCP 5.0.4. Any 720P flavor is not supported yet for Pal users.
We have made tests on a G5, a I-Book and a Powerbook( Quicktime 7.0.4, OS 10.4.6) connecting either the camera through firewire or the P2 store through USB. We ‘ve used internal drives and an external 1 To LaCie drive
1080/50i and 1080/25P can be mixed on the same sequence without any rendering.
We have made a 2 weeks shooting and charts trial and have been surprised by the fact the unit we have tested underexposed in most shooting conditions over 1 F stop.
