Ok thanks. At least now I know I’m not missing out what would be a very handy shortcut. My quest for virtual mouseless editing continues 🙂

Thanks gentlemen. Also in case it helps anybody else I figured out a way to do this in Metadata Hootenanny with the already exported files since I have 150 of them. It’s a bit lengthy bc it covers two scenarios so here goes:

    IF WORKING WITH MOVs:
Note: make a backup of all files first or test on a small group.

    Open MOVs in Metadata Hootenanny:
Select all files in Main View (⌘\)
Change to Metadata and Info (⌘I)
    Modify all info as needed
    Save (⌘S)
    Select all edited movies
Set destination for outputting new files.
    Do one of the following:
‘Self Contained’ will create new copies (takes longer than ‘Save in Place’)
‘As Reference Movie’ don’t use this option. It creates alias-like files.
‘Save in Place’ will modify original files so make a backup if choosing this option.

IF WORKING WITH M4V (probably applies to MP4s or other file types as well):
Note: make a backup of all files first or test on a small group.

    Open M4Vs in Metadata Hootenanny:
Select all files in Main View (⌘\)
Change to Metadata and Info (⌘I)
    Modify all info as needed
    Save (⌘S)
    Select all edited movies
Set destination for outputting new files.
Choose Self Contained. This will create new copies and takes longer than ‘Save in Place’. This also changes file extension to MOV.
Note: Save in Place does not support M4Vs.
    Change extension back to “.m4v”

    Thanks.

Hi Bret, so are you saying that editing in a 1080i timeline FCPX will do the correct pull down? Will this work if the original footage is ProRes 422HQ progressive? The intended use will be Vimeo. I know Vimeo supports 23.98 but for reasons that would make this discussion too long, just know that I need to use 23.98 footage and export 30fps and have it look as smooth as it can.

    Thanks.

Thanks to all for your replies!

@Oliver: Because I have so many trailers for this client and it’s an ongoing gig, it’s not practical nor lucrative for me to export everything and bring it into AE to add the pulldown. I will however keep this technique in mind for future projects.

@Bret: I wound up implementing a hybrid solution based on your comments. What I did was selectively apply auto speed only to those shots in which the cadence issue was most noticeable. I didn’t apply to all because it shortened the whole edit by too much as I had to time the edit to an audio track.

    Again thanks!

Thanks! I’ll try that if it happens again. While I was waiting for someone to respond what I did was create a new Library and I then dragged everything except the offending item to it. Worked. I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

    Thanks!

I’m trying to stack two FADE IN FADE OUTs. BUT, I just made a quick export and I see both fades happen in the QT file but on the sequence only the top-most layer appears to fade when I scrub or play it. Weird!

Could it be a setting in FCP?

Thanks Bret, I did know about the slug trick. What surprised however was that I could swear I was able to stack fades like that.

Now I wonder if I have a buggy FCP7 installation. I don’t have access to another Mac with FCP7 to check. Holding off till the new MacBook Pros come out to buy one 😉

    Thanks again!

Thanks Bret. It’s RETURN I know that’s what you meant. I’ve been after this for the longest time and I could swear I tried both ENTER and RETURN on top of all other kinds of key combos!

November 27, 2012 at 11:59 pm in reply to: Quartz Extreme capable video card error

I had to drop off my main workstation for repair so when I fired up an old IMac to get some work done while the other gets worked on I got this error message. As others have noted nothing has changed on this old Mac which used to run FCP flawlessly. What worked for me was to change the display setting from Thousands of colors back to Millions. For some reason I must have been testing something and had to mess with that setting.

Hope it helps someone out there.

    Regards

    Xavier
