I have an XL1s but have not used it in quite a while. I seem to remember that there is a menu item which does in fact stamp the camera info over the video, which struck me as insane. So you may be screwed –but I don’t know for sure, as the camera is offsite, so I can’t check.

December 13, 2009 at 5:57 am in reply to: Shooting Doc w/7D

The 7D has been proven to have overheating problems in heavy shooting situations – primarily in 720p and 480p formats. If you have a backup camera, that might solve the problem – but your client might want to know about this limitation of the 7D.

I have one and like it – but would nervous to have it as my workhorse camera without some heavy backup.

June 5, 2009 at 3:47 pm in reply to: AE Ram preview is not the same as when I render

“Try this trick: reduce the comp window’s size to 50% (you’ll find the adjustment at the bottom of the comp window), and reduce the comp’s resolution to Half (again, it’s at the bottom of the window). Then try a RAM Preview and see what happens.”

Yep, tried all that, plus fiddling with memory settings, closing all other apps., etc. I’m using a MacPro, so I have as much suds as are available computer-wise.

So when doing HD, you render out clips to see what you have?

December 12, 2008 at 4:09 pm in reply to: To 16:9 or not to 16:9

You guys are reminding of the day we made a conscious decision to abandon the agency business and focus on corporate. Life has been much less frustrating since.

As far as 16:9 or not – do you really have to make a decision on that until post anyway? As long as I have the 4:3 markers up on my monitor when we shoot, so that I can reassure my client that we are not “committing” to 16:9 by losing important information outside of those markers, they typically don’t care. You lose some of your artistic freedom by composing for a 4:3 version even though you are shooting 16:9 – but it’s a great opportunity to add onto the post budget later by offering “widescreen” and “fullscreen” versions – it’s a perceived value added service.

    Just my 2 cents.

December 11, 2008 at 6:04 pm in reply to: Black spots on 17″ monitor

I had that exact problem on my 17″. I thought it was dead pixels, but Panasonic told me that it was dirt(?). It had never been out of the studio, but c’est la vie.

They charged me about three bills to open it, clean it and return it.
