I am on Avid so I don’t have the 2 types of file problem but I back up everything to a good firewire drive immediately; and to 50 GB Blu-Ray disc, when I have the time. I ,too, shoot long form and the hard drives can add up even when they are 1 TB drives. I’ll say one thing, as a shooter I have become more efficient because of the back-up issue(I don’t want to back up a bunch of bad camera moves or just bad shots). I also try to delete any bad footage in the field(or the hotel room at night) if I’m sure it is something unusable.
In the field I use a couple of passport portable hard drives but these are for temporary storage to free up the cards and the firestore. The firestore posed a problem because it holds so much. I usually separate the different shots into smaller segments using the P2 content management software and put them in individual folders(as Day 1 am shots and Day 1 pm shots or whatever works)I try to keep the folders size small enough to fit on a 50Gb Blu-ray. -
I’m using p2 in MC 3.1 on a MacPro and it works great. I transfer the P2 cards or firestore to back-up drives and edited directly, just bringing in the clips(not the media) using drop down menu under “file-import P2-clips to bin” I’m able to edit without bringing in the actual media on to my Avid drives. I only bring in the media if I need to output to tape and my usual delivery method is export to DVD.Check this out- https://www.avid.com/p2/

Thanks for the info. I noticed in a tutorial video that the Encore interface looked similar to DVDSp’s which is comforting. It’s also nice to know that menus I have created in Photoshop over the years will still be usable. Blu-Ray is a big plus as we are just moving to Hi-def. I have Toast but no good way to do more complicated menus or complex interaction authoring for hi-def.
Will Encore work okay as a stand alone program ? How good is the compression software from Adobe compared with something like Squeeze?
Thanks again -
I think this was what I was doing but my shuttle is not adjusting any numbers. “Hold” starts the numbers flashing and the “set” button moves the flashing from hours to minutes etc. but the shuttle/jog does not have any effect. I checked settings under the control panel and these were set as you mentioned, but no luck. It’s a refurbished deck, new to me, and maybe there is a loose wire. I have set the TC on other PVWs,BVWs & UVWs and others but it had been a while so I thought maybe I was doing something wrong. If there is not anything else you can think of that might be wrong, I will just power it down (this resets it to zeros) or pay to have it looked at. Thanks for the help.

I had the same problem on a Mac(audio playback from timeline would change speeds) and I re-set my display settings making sure my new monitors were on the correct resolution and it fixed the problem.

Thanks for the suggestions.I rechecked these settings but to no avail. I even bought a new keyspan 28XG adapter, re-installed the keyspan software and bought a new Avid cable for the RS-422 deck control. It still will digitize for a random number of seconds and then quit and start again.Sometimes it will be only 2 seconds and then maybe as much as 40 sec or more. I will check with Keyspan to see if they have any ideas and try Avid service again(new management, maybe better service).Am I the only one with this problem using XpressPro 5.8? I had a similar set up with XpressDv and before that MediaComposer and no problems(using keyspan adapters and Sony decks).

The only setting in “capture settings” I can find that allows me to change track info, TC or control track, is “pre-roll method” which I changed from “Best Available” to “Standard Timecode” but the end result is the same.Is there somewhere else to change this other than in capture window?
Do you know of anyone with this type of capture(analogue BetaSp deck and keyspan for deck control)that works as it should?
