  • Have you tried the following (?):
Export out an XML of only your edited sequence, not your entire library.
    Close the current library.
    Quit FCPX.
    Shutdown and restart your computer.
    Open FCPX.
Import your footage into a brand new Library.
See if it plays correctly, and then if it does, import your XML. Relinking to all your footage.

Cool. I noticed those transitions, which is why I asked about why you have each clip in its own secondary storyline. It was different than how I do it. Thanks!

Just curious, but why do you have the two clips in their own secondary storylines? They are positioned in such as way as to appear as though there is no gar between them, and thus no reason for them to be in their own containers.

Thanks for this run down. I haven’t had this problem yet, but as a teacher, I expect to sooner rather than later, and it’s nice to have some info on how to trouble shoot and fix sync-drift problems.

Thanks Mark. I do not have one, as my last Sekonic light meter died on me. I have added that to my list of items I need and will get one to test this out. Thanks!

We are using Sony’s mirrorless a 6300’s. I really appreciated the low-light level sensitivity of these cameras, without the introduction of distracting digital noise, with the added benefit of being in our price range.

I’m going to look into the specifics on this camera with the above tips and how-to’s and run our own tests.

Thank you to everyone for responding. Love learning new things about my cameras because it’s more that I can teach my students.

Mark, I hope you don’t mind, but I’m going to use this as a daily lesson for my students! What a great, simple way to visually teach my students (and myself!) about what happens when you “push” your digital footage.

Thank you for clearing my head! I was worried about the digital noise that would occur, too. Digital noise is pretty ugly compared to film grain, especially if you’re doing some exposure tricks in post.

  • I think I’m confused as to what speed problem is going on…. I haven’t seen anything with any of my students computers on import, and believe me, if there’s a problem a class full of high schoolers will find the darn thing. LOL

Let me get this straight, when you have selected your clips in the Import Window and click import, you can’t view any of the clips without stuttering occurring? And this is somehow related to FCPX generating new waveforms?

Sorry, I’ve re-read a number of posts to try and get this straight, so I can inform my students and we can avoid any problems with importing.

Our collective experience has been, once we hit the import selected button, the clips are immediately available to edit, other than the fact that you have the progress dots reminding you that the footage isn’t technically finished importing. We know that you can proceed with the edit, but we usually don’t because the import background task stops every time you move your curser over the footage.
