OK. I understand now, but I have no idea how to handle the sporadic behavior. I hate to say it, but my money’s on the fact that it’s booting via FW. I just don’t think Mac’s were built to run that way. From what I’ve read here (and the few times I had to boot from a FW drive) that’s a process you really only want to go to when trouble shooting. If there’s any way to switch back to using your internal as you main boot I would do so. Of course, back everything up first and wait until any projects you’re on are complete. Hope you have better luck!!!

Also, if memory serves the built in FW ports on Macs share the same bus. Meaning if you have some power hungry things plugged in, they’re all sharing one bus, which will cause slow downs as well.

So let me get this straight…. Instead of booting from the internal drive on you Dual 2.5 G5, you’re booting from FireWire? If so, why, and which type of FW are you booting from (400 or 800)? From my experience, booting from an external drive is usually reserved only for repairing the main, internal drive. If you’re doing what I think you’re doing, I would stop booting from FW. Do what ever you have to, but don’t boot from FW.

I work in a similar process to how bblaser works, but I’d like to add to this. Working in the infomercial world, I have to use tons of titles, so to make sure I stay in my 4:3 framing when adding titles, I use a great plug-in from Digital Heaven. It’s a 4:3 title safe generator you can use in 16:9 timelines. This way you can make sure that everything is in title safe!

This essentially what I did as well, for the same reasons. I know that down the line I can add more RAM when I need it, but I got 4 GIGs and the ATI 1900XT from Apple. Besides, the adding RAM in these new Mac Pros is different from previous models, and didn’t want to risk placing it in myself (yet).

OK, we can all agree that having your system as it stands right now backed up so you don’t have to worry about “down time.” What I would like is a link to a step by step process of creating a firewire back up over my main system that I could work from, “just in case.” Does that even make sense?

This is slightly off topic, but it’s a feature I hope they added….

Don’t laugh too hard, but I hope that Title 3D gets spell check. I’m a horrible speller, and I always have to go to Dictionary to check everything. It’d be nice if it were built in like it is in the rest of Apple’s software.

Sounds very cool, but I’m still a little confused. So when I’m capturing, I don’t choose the native format of the footage, I choose the ProRez 422? Or do I choose the native format and FCP automatically puts it in the 422? I think why I’m confused is because the ProRez somehow keeps the information of the native footage, but it acts like it’s smaller footage.

From what I’ve seen, this is the first step Motion has taken to step up and actually challenge AE. I don’t even use AE, but all the pros here have instilled in me a huge respect of AE’s capabilities, and everything I’ve heard so far about Motion sounds like it’s expanding to do the things that AE could do and Motion used to not be able to. In particular the tracking and true 3D capabilities. This means a lot to someone like me who has limited funds, and time to learn complicated new software. So something like Motion 3 will be the gateway to more creative projects! Way to go Apple!

BTW, Sorry to post this on your thread. You’re the only one to actually mention the new Motion 3 and thought this would be an OK place to post.
