I’m curious to know how this works then….

So say you have a Kona LHe, an MXO and an Apple Cinema Display (OK so take my future setup). Right now, without the MXO in the mix, I have a client monitor (not color critical) setup as my external monitor. This runs out via the analog setup from my Kona LHe. If and when I get the MXO, I’d have to change my setup every time I needed to capture to the Kona and then back to the MXO for basic monitoring. Correct? I wouldn’t be able to have my Kona still suppling the client monitor, while my Cinema display was color critical during editing?

Jerry, I was wondering about what you said about not having the capability to use the monitor the OP wants to use for color critical applications. Could they not add the Matrox MXO? It has the functionality to give you Blue Only color bars and there for get broadcast quality color. This is mentioned in Shane’s review of the MXO here:

What do you think? I’m pretty sure I’m going to get one since I have the Apple Cinema HD (30″) display, but I’m curious to hear what your thoughts are.

So, even though HDV bitstream rate is essentially the same as DV (25Mbits/s) it’s still slower in the long run, because of the transcoding out of MPEG that the NLE has to do in order to work with it. I think I’ve got it now. Thanks!

OK, I’ve spent most of the day reading up on editing with HDV and ProRes, and I can’t seem to get a straight answer. Let me explain the main type of work I do, and then maybe that will help answer this…

I work mostly on projects that are extremely title and graphics intensive. Lot’s of titles all over the place. We don’t do a lot of compositing (keying) but we do maybe once a year. To a lesser extent, I have relatively simple projects that don’t need many titles. Maybe some name keys and title cards at the most. My deliverables are typically DVD and DigiBeta for the title intensive work.

Thanks, Bob. I had a feeling that’s what I should go for, but I just wasn’t sure if there were any hidden benefits to having the IoHD this early, especially working mostly with HDV. Thanks!

I have a couple of questions concerning the IoHD and getting a deck. I’ve got a very limited amount of green I can spend next year, but I need to take the next step to update my editing system. I have a Kona LHe in a Mac Pro dualy 3ghz.

I think this depends a great deal on the freedom the editor has in general on the project. Many of the projects I’m involved in, the offline section could be viewed as the more button pushing section because the producer or director are much more involved in calling the shots. While in the online section, the editor (in my experience) has more freedom in how the edit is tweaked and polished and how the graphics and other finishing touches are used and completed.
