  • As strange as it sounds, we’ve been having that issue on some systems with FCPX on two displays. It seems as if moving the UI to one monitor allows us to import properly. Lee, are you on a dual monitor setup?

I did a side job for a friend last weekend on my definitely not top-of-the-line MacBook Air (late 2012) and it performed admirably well. I hooked up a second display and used USB3 for storage. My material was a mix of ProRes 422, H.264, XDCAM, and stills of various sizes. This was pretty straightforward storytelling and a handful of filters, templates, and color correction on every clip. I have not installed Adobe CC on this machine because the SSD is only 128GB.

April 6, 2014 at 4:43 pm in reply to: using the magnetic timeline effectively

    Hey Jason-

It really depends on the type of project you’re working on. For 30 second promos (of which I do a lot) I generally start with a 30 second gap clip, connect my shots to it, and then stamp them down into the primary as I “commit” them to the cut. For stuff that’s more open ended time-wise I put everything that relates to the story in the primary and connect supporting b-roll, music, and effects. That’s what FCPX feels built for, and it’s quite powerful in that regard. I appreciate the magnetic timeline when I’m drilling down to a very precise edit that I’m finessing and know that I’m not knocking things out of place downstream or accidentally overwriting something outside the frame of my zoomed in workspace. You can also view a secondary storyline as a useful “pod” of shots that you can drag around as a group, ripple trim, or juggle clips around in easily.

Honestly I’ve been working almost exclusively in X since late 2012 and I’m still discovering new ways to get things done quickly. Keep at it and I’ll bet you find the same.

    Cheers,
    Bill

March 24, 2014 at 4:40 pm in reply to: CUDA Driver Update Issue

I contacted Blackmagic about this issue last week, and this was their reply:

There is an issue with CUDA 5.5.47 with Resolve 10.1.3.
You will have to revert back to CUDA 5.5.28. Please try that and see if that helps.

If the problem still persists, please get the capture logs and system information for us to review.

  • I have FCP7 and FCPX installed side by side. If you have Final Cut Studio installed and then install X from the App Store, it will move your legacy apps into a “Final Cut Studio” folder within Applications.

Make sure your Mac is qualified to run Mavericks, and the more RAM you can throw at it the better. I would advise making a complete clone of your internal drive (if not two) as a safety precaution, then wipe the drive and do a clean install of Mavericks, FCP7, and FCPX in that order. It’s extra work, but I think you’ll have a more stable system with a clean slate.

I have switched between FCP7 and FCPX regularly in an edit session, primarily when I need to master to HDCAM.

    Hope this helps,
    Bill

    Thanks, Patrice.

March 3, 2014 at 2:38 pm in reply to: New MP and FCP7

    Same here-

We received one of the Mac Pros we ordered and Final Cut Studio 3 is running fine on it with an AJA Io XT. We’re having audio issues with FCP7 and the AJA Io 4K, but the engineers at AJA tell us a fix is in the works.

Fortunately we’re using FCP7 less and less, mostly to open legacy projects and finish up long-term jobs.

October 8, 2013 at 5:17 pm in reply to: Decklink performance with FCPX

That’s true, but I’ve seen the same performance issues on a 2010 Mac Pro and a 2012 iMac, both with the fastest processors available and at least 32GB of RAM. Both playback settings yield identical results as well. It’s not a total deal breaker but it’s a big step backwards.

    Hey Bill-

The “other” FCP-centric Bill Davis will be there (virtually) too. Looking forward to it!
