OK, sorry, I missed a vital clue, user error and case closed.

The clip bin was pointing at the wrong files (same file names). Be it known that 1080 ProRes HQ plays fine without render bars in FCP7 via USB3 RAID-0.

It is weird, especially since I used a standard preset in Compressor to convert the clips.
Here are the specs from one of the clips as copied out of the QT viewer info window:

    Apple ProRes 422 (HQ), 1,920 x 1,080 (1,888 x 1,062)
Linear PCM, 16 bit big-endian signed integer, 2 channels, 48000 Hz
    23.98
    446.3 MB
    182.88 Mbit/s

I did exactly that to start with, and I get orange bars with Unlimited RT and red bars with Safe RT.

Shane you are as always a wellspring of advantage for growing professionals. Thank you!

Now begins the impossible prediction: will I more sooner learn FCPX or Premier to make a major skills advance, now that I have new equipment and a big project to start?

Yes, FCP 7 latest (last) version.

Would FCP X change any of these issues?

The only consumer media player I have found that will play a seamless loop with NO menu appearances is a Western Digital 1TB Live Hub (not the smaller one) using a USB in the front port. I called them and they confirmed this was their only model to do so- they say it is a “living art” and “digital signage” feature.

Otherwise a Bright Sign unit will do it but needs setup from a Windows PC.

And there are certainly more expensive and complicated options, but these are sub-$400 scenarios.

What I do is open a fresh project and paste in the sequences and bins I need for that stage of the job. It’s not uncommon to have multiple projects for one job in order to separate big chunks. Just re-saving, or sometimes even saving as, does not “de-install” all the prior stuff in there.

I’m running FCP 7 on 10.7.5 and have been for a while on a 2010-era MPRO w/ FW800 drives. Never any problems with ProRes, so there may be some other anomaly involved, something else that’s changed if you have used transcoded R3D clips before with no problems. Some other tax on the system.
