It depends on what your conforming for but in the majority of cases for Grade and Online I find the request is to go to DX185x. This is Avid’s native codec and the X is the 10bit version.

DNx220 wont be an option because this is for other frame rates. I believe 29.97, 30, 23.98 fps. In the 1080/50i world 185 & X is what you are looking for.

The 10bit option has become the default for going into the grade and online due to its apparent ability to allow for detailed and precise colour changes especially if you are dealing with multi layered and noded grades. All sorts of info out there about this.

    Update on this

MP4 Transcode works well and relinks in 99 % of circumstances to correct clips. however with a re-wrap to MOV, I am seeing transcode times cut in half. I guess the legacy of Avids MP4 dislike is still being felt

  • Hi Pat.

    Thanks a lot

Nope p footage and delivery is i . I am just thinking I might be better off ingesting further eps as I , that way ruling out any issues down the line. If the edit, online and reversions are all 1080i then I don’t have to be concerned about what is and isn’t the same .

  • One additional concern is that we plan to do reversions by onlining the main version of the show and then chopping around this to create alternative and shorter versions. This will mean that we will end up with this exported file at 1080i in a 25p project. Any issues here? Presumably it will just be a case of Avid motion adapting this main file.

    thanks

  • Thanks for the reply Pat. Very helpful.

That makes sense. So it’s fine. If I receive interlaced footage , toggle the project, ama or import at interlaced and then toggle back, taking every clip at it’s merit.

Do you have any thoughts at the conform stage. I will need to relink back to the 25p footage. Does this have to be done in 25p format setting. Because I am going to be conforming from PDW discs I do not have the luxury of relinking large amounts of the sequence before transcoding for the online. Will it be a case of relink at 25p and then toggle to 50i and trans , toggle back as per ingest or can I just conform in an i project?

    Again thanks

My understanding is that Avid is a lot happier with MOV than MP4 with AMA and the Gopro codec. This may be a hangover of mine from the past when using MC v5 etc

    Using 8.4.2 on OSX 10.10.3

I am just doing a transcode and relink test. Will report back but any thoughts appreciated

  • Ok. I have minimal footage in at 16bit , all XF305 so will just up convert from now on you reckon.

Any problems that my project started ut as 16bit and had sequences made as such. Have now changed the AUDIO PROJECT settings to 24 bit?

  • Yeap got that thanks, but it looks like there is no way of seeing the sequence as a sequence, just as playback in the source monitor. Would be a great option

    thanks for help
