I had a gig yesterday and I set the gain down to -23 dB, and didn’t have any problems when in an extremely loud environment. I think I may go with Ty’s suggestion and try the Rode NTG-3. How does this mic compare to my Azden SGM-1X?

I found the specs on both mics, and besides the frequency response and S/N ratio I didn’t see a huge difference. Is that what makes the Rode NTG-3 so great? Here are the specs…

    RODE NTG-3
    Power P48 (48V) phantom supply
    Acoustic Principle Line Gradient

I don’t run it through a mixer, I just go straight to camera. If I run it through a mixer, it’s no big deal getting the levels where they need to be. When running it through the camera input, I have the option of adjusting it –8 dBu to –65 dBu. It never really seems to matter how low I adjust it, it always comes out distorted if the sound is too loud (except when using the mixer). I’d prefer to use the camera without mixer.

Is there a major difference between the Rode NTG-3, Sennheiser ME64 or ME66?

The part about scrolling slowly did it. I adjusted the preferences to show the smallest thumbnail possible, and then I selected all the images, and then scrolled. When I got to the end and exported the images they all showed up. The small caveat here is that you do have to ‘select all’ and then scroll. The first time I tried it, I scrolled and then selected all, but that didn’t work.

    Thanks.

Great. What was your experience with Sony. Quick turnaround?

Yes, that would have been helpful information: I have an EX1. I purchased in August 2008.

    Thanks for the tip.

Luckily this is just a talking head clip, and so there’s not a ton of movement. I’ll update my results on here once I get to that point in post. Thanks for all the tips!

The link below is what the frequency spectrum looks like in Soundtrack. Below that is a sampling from one of the recordings of someone ringing a bell tower.

I haven’t tried a waveform or frequency spectrum analysis, nor another shotgun mic. I’ll see if I can track either down.

I’m not using the camera’s phantom power. The mic uses a AAA battery.

All the other mics I use seem to be working fine.

Are there any other audio input controls I could try, other than the trim or level control?

Do you or anyone else no how it compares to Schneider’s, in terms of quality?
