I just rewired the XLR plug to be balanced rather than unbalanced, and the noise went away. Clear as a bell now.

My understanding of balanced vs unbalanced is relatively rudimentary at best. Why use one over the other?

Sorry, I should clarify. I hear the noise when the cable is plugged in only– and I’ve tried two different ones of the same configuration, both in good shape. I’m monitoring it via the headphone jack on the camera. The noise is there, whether or not the other XLR channel is occupied.

I hear the noise during monitoring and after recording. The link from the original post was the noise I had during the recording.

The official word from Photoflex is that there isn’t an available speedring for the v-light yet. However, the tota one fits just fine.

Thanks for the tip. I looked on Photoflex’s site and I’ll probably try either the silverdome or whitedome. However, I can’t seem to find a speedring that will fit Lowel’s V-light- the tota seems the closest. I’ve contacted Photoflex about it, I’ll post the results back here.

    Hi Ty,

Thanks for your response. I’m not sure what you’re referring to when you say “The Link.” Is this a universal adapter available somewhere?

    Thanks!

    Great- thanks for your help!

One last question…how does the power supply differ from the camera-supplied phantom power (+48v)?

I originally purchased them only with the intent of using them on my wireless packs, thus I have no power supplies. Any recommendations?

This worked great! I used the tip (from Brian’s link) about triangles of gaff tape combined with the moleskin to help cut out the clothing noise. I then threw on a patch of faux fur on top of outer piece of gaff tape. I actually ended up placing all of it outside the clothing since it was out of frame. Thanks!
