Strange flutter noise on mic channel
I’m using a wireless lavaliere (sennheiser evolution g2) on my Sony EX1. When I plug it in via the standard 1/8″ mini to unbalanced XLR male connector I get a strange fluttering noise. Oddly, it makes the noise whether I have it plugged in or not, or when I have it off. So I’m guessing the problem is just the cable. I tried it with two different cables, of the same specs (different brands) and I get the same result.

You have an unbalanced XLR connector on your camera?
At what point are you monitoring to hear the fluter? Where are your headphones plugged in?

I hear the noise during monitoring and after recording. The link from the original post was the noise I had during the recording.

Let’s try this again.
You hear the noise whether the cable is plugged in or not. That means it’s not the cables.
What’s plugged into the camera inputs?

Sorry, I should clarify. I hear the noise when the cable is plugged in only– and I’ve tried two different ones of the same configuration, both in good shape. I’m monitoring it via the headphone jack on the camera. The noise is there, whether or not the other XLR channel is occupied.

I just rewired the XLR plug to be balanced rather than unbalanced, and the noise went away. Clear as a bell now.
My understanding of balanced vs unbalanced is relatively rudimentary at best. Why use one over the other?

Congratulations! You have just answered your own question. Balanced circuits are less noisy.
