Glad it worked for you. It does take awhile at first, but it’s a very powerful and useful bit of software to keep in your toolbox.

If the footage is already on a DVD (presumably a “playable” DVD–not a data DVD), why not simply “rip” (copy) the DVD contents to your hard drive and work directly with the VOB files? (Vegas does import VOB files). I really don’t see a reason for converting to DV using an ADVC-300. Plus, simply “copying” them is much, much faster than “playing” them through your ADVC unit. Depending upon what type of editing you want to do, Vegas may or may not be the best choice of editors. In any case, you need to provide a little more detail.

July 25, 2015 at 1:56 am in reply to: How to set a certain aspect ratio and keep it

What is the aspect ratio of your 480P video? I presume that it is 4:3 and that your project settings are 1280×720. If you drag the 480P video onto a track that is on top of your image, you should see the sides of the image with the video in the middle. If not, open your pan/crop window and make sure that the preset is set to Default and not something else. It sounds as if it has been set to 16:9.

I use Rx-3 as my sound editor, and it does not run from within Vegas

Bob, I presume you mean Izotope RX3. Perhaps I’m missing something, but I now use RX4, and before RX3, and could always run it from within Vegas. Just set your Audio Editor Preference to RX3 (I actually go back forth between RX4 and SF 10, as my preferred editor.) Simply enter Ctrl-E to edit the media file for the selected event directly or right-click and select Open Copy in your preferred editor, which simply creates a take for the selected event and opens the take. I use this so often, that it’s now a keyboard shortcut of mine.

I’ve used Fraps in the past without any problem, including fairly recently capturing some Google Earth footage. First, make sure that you have the latest version of their 64bit codec installed. If that’s not the problem, you could always transcode Fraps into a lossless codec that is Vegas friendly such as Lagarith, Magic YUV or UT Video. You can use the freeware Virtualdub to easily do this. Alternatively, you could try a different capture package such as Mirilli’s Action (I believe they have a 30 day trial period). I found that with my system, at least, there were fewer dropped frames with Action as opposed to Fraps and a lot more options for Desktop capture. Or lastly, you could try different editing software. Lots of options.

Just a thought. Have you rendered other projects involving different source material? If not, you might give that a try. Although Fraps seems to be the likely culprit, it may be that the problem has nothing to do with Fraps at all. Worth a shot to try using same render settings but with different source material to see if you still have the problem or it disappears.

    [Rick Hughes]

I can improve by zoom in on ‘pan + crop’ and get image to fit full width – but would lose then top & bottom off image …..can I do that once and have it apply across all slides

Very simple to do in Vegas. Once you’re happy with one, just Copy. Then select whatever other slides you want, Right-click and select Paste-Event Attributes. It will apply, the same pan/crop settings and effect settings to those events you’ve selected.

When I find a manual that’s worth reading, I’ll start directing people to it.

Well, why don’t you write one? Seriously. Given the seemingly shrinking base of Vegas users, it probably wouldn’t be a very successful commercial undertaking, but it might be fun. Just a thought.

Thanks so much for your detailed explanation. One thing I really enjoy about Vegas, like Photoshop, is that there is always so much more to learn, lots of new tricks, even for us old otters. You should be commended for the time you spend to give help and also your patience when so many others (including me)would simply say Read The blank Manual. Again, thanks.

[John Rofrano] That’s why Vegas Pro allows you to control the mapping when you read the file back in.

How do you do this? When I read the file with 8 audio channels that I’ve created, it only shows a single stereo track with the first 2 channels? How do I get the other 6 channels and do the assignments?
