Any advice on how to handle this? He has five spots to knock out by Friday, so I don’t think he has any choice but to use the signal he’s getting with SYS FORMAT set to 1080i. Have you ever heard of one of these decks losing its output signal this way?

We finally solved this late last night. The other editor had spoked to the owner of the rental company, and they had gone through the menus with no luck. We went through the menus again last night and Menu Item 020, SYS FORMAT, was set to 720p. When we switched it to 1080i, FCP recognized the deck. Is this normal? The footage was from a 720p Varicam.
Either way, it worked.

We have now tried this on three different systems — two of those were running FCP 5, the other FCP 4.5. We are getting video when we switch our capture preset to DV, but nothing in DVCPro HD. Device control continues to function normally either way.
When loading the DVCPro HD easy setups, we get an error message saying “Unable to locate the following external devices: DVCPro HD (720p60)…”
Is it likely that this is a problem with the Firewire card in the rented deck?
Any help would be great!

I’m assuming that most of the difficulties with both of these codecs stems from their very nature as MPEG video. That’s a lot of decoding to work on a single frame.
I’m not using IMX, but I am using HDV quite a bit. What, specifically, are the problems you are having? Especially elaborate on the downconvert issue.

For those of you using a Blackmagic Decklink card, be sure to use the Blackmagic HDV easy setup, rather than the generic Apple HDV. Sorry, but I don’t have any advice for those with any other specific hardware setups.

Assuming you are working with timecoded material and a controllable device, my best suggestion is to use media manager to create offline material in a new project, then batch digitize the new clips. You’ll want to delete unused material in the new offline project, of course, and don’t include outside affiliate clips. If you have enough room, you can load the media for the new project, check it for accuracy, then delete your old media files.
My assumption is that while certain known bugs were fixed in Media Manager, new ones have been created in the process.

Sorry, I was sleepy in htat last post and didn’t use good terminology. By source, I meant reel. That files all had names. Some clips had differing names, but none had reel names or numbers. (I loaded evrything through Lumiere, then transcoded with MPEG Streamclip, which doesn’t preserve the reel names.) Either way, I was able to perform the MM functions successfully with those files under 4.5, but not in 5.0.

I had done a project previously in HDV captured through Lumiere and convereted to DVCPro HD. I modified the timecode on those clips (with much aggravation) and created a new project through the Media Manager. I was then able to capture the new clips, based on the modified timecode, from my FX1 with no problems. I was working in 1080i60, so that could be a factor.
Are you getting TC readouts form the Z1 in the capture window?

Sorry I didn’t spell that out, but I did make the sequence clips independent. I also tried the trick of pasting copies of the sequences into a new, intermediate project. None of that works. I’m wondering if it could be an issue with the fact that the HDV clips don’t have a source name.
Mind you, I have done dozens of these in FCP HD 4.5 over the past month, and they have worked despite the lack of a source name, without making the sequence clips independent, and without introducing an intermediate project. (Making sequence clips independent did seem to help with some weird 1-frame audio/video sync issues in the conformed projects, though.)

I know my original question hasn’t been answered yet, but I have a another related one:
Has anyone tried conforming a project with handles in 5.0? Typically, whenever I would do that in 4.5, clips with overlapping handles owuld be a single media file — as they should be — but they would all be slipped so that the last frame of the clip corresponded to the last frame of the media. Is that still an issue?
Also, any insight on my post that started this thread would be really appreciated.
