  • unable to batch capture HDV footage in FCP 5

I installed FCP 5 this morning and haven’t been able to batch capture HDV footage from my Z1. I can capture HDV footage using capture now . I can batch capture down-converted DV clips from the Z1 but I can’t capture HDV clips.

Everything has been shot in 1080i50 so I’m using the easy setup HDV 1080i50. I’ve tried both the device control preset Sony HDV 1080i50 firewire and Sony HDV firewire. Nothing seems to work.

Doe’s anyone know what I’m doing wrong?

I heard something about a forced scene detection, where a new shot automaticly starts a new clip when capturing. I than allready wondered how Batch capture would work. I can’t tell though, because I am still waiting for my copy of FCP5.

If it would really be unavailable it would really suck. Things like interval recording would be a real nuisance.

I hope this isn’t the case, if is offline editing is out the door.

I sent the better part of a week logging in 15 hours of tape in FCP HD ready to be captured as HDV when FCP 5 was released.

As far as forced scene detection is concerned, it’s true, FCP 5 works just like iMovie HD.

What is the error if any you are geting when you try to batch capture?

Does it allow you to select just one of the clips to capture from the list?

I had done a project previously in HDV captured through Lumiere and convereted to DVCPro HD. I modified the timecode on those clips (with much aggravation) and created a new project through the Media Manager. I was then able to capture the new clips, based on the modified timecode, from my FX1 with no problems. I was working in 1080i60, so that could be a factor.

Are you getting TC readouts form the Z1 in the capture window?

I’m definitely getting TC in the capture window and I’m able to log clips in, but when I try to capture a single clip or batch capture nothing happens, ZIP, no error message, nothing.

I’ve just discovered a HDV primer under the FCP 5 help menu “HD and Broadcast formats”. The documentation on HDV clearly states that working with log and capture with HDV is the same as working with DV. Log your clip then capture them, single or batch.

My set up is correct according to the HDV primer, so… that means there’s a problem with the camera, with the FCP 5 or Tiger install, a conflict with other software/drivers, a hardware issue on the G5 or a bug in FCP 5.

I’m also going to install an OS on and FCP5 on a clean drive to try to isolate any install issues or software/hardware conflicts. I have a Decklink Extreme board in the G5.

A problem with the camera is a real possibility. The Z1 has a weak DV/firewire board. I made the mistake of plugging in the firewire cable while the camera was turned on and blew the board. The Sony technician said that in the last two weeks he had seen three cameras with the same problem. All had been plugged into G5’s. I’m going to try another camera or a HDV deck later today to isolate the camera as the culprit.

All of the above should narrow down the possibilities. I keep you informed.

    Problem Solved!

I installed a new OSX 1.4.1 and FCP 5 on a new drive it worked perfectly. I then installed the BM driver for the Decklink Extreme card and that worked as well, except for the lack of preview, but that’s a known issue. If you’ve got a broadcast monitor you can plug the S Video into the camera and preview your log and capture that way.

Do you mean that you can not see the footage in the “log & capture” window??? I have been breaking my A&# trying to get it to work!

    Thanks,

I, too, have the same problem. But here’s the twist. I just got my new system up and running on Tuesday. It’s a G5 Dual 2.7 gig processors with 4.5 gig of RAM, AJA Kona2 with the breakout box. I finally got everything up and running so I hooked up my Sony HVR-M10U HDV machine to the firewire port at the back of my Mac. I logged footage and tried to batch capture – Nothing! The same as Brent with his original problem but mine is already a clean new system. There’s obviously a bug in FCS.
