  • [Richard Garabedain] “I don’t understand. we are slowly upgrading our computers to windows 10. But what we did not know was that once you open a project in AE 2019 windows 10, it cannot be opened on other computers or saved for earlier versions. “

You have never been able to directly open a newer AEP from an older version of Ae.

You can save down from Ae 2019 to Ae 2018 via File > Save As > Save a copy as CC (15.x) — I know this works because I just did it yesterday — but of course if your project is dependent on a new feature in 2019, that will not work.

Did you get a specific error message?

If you want to loop that set of keyframes endlessly after the final keyframe, use

    loopOut(“cycle”);

My recommendation: make the rectangle with an open path — just two points — and a very think stroke. Add the Trim Path animator, then link its End property to your slider.

Can you show a screenshot or two of what you’re trying to do so I can try to explain in the context of your project?

An “offset” loop accumulates; it loops the segment you specify, but it offsets the beginning of each loop segment from the end of the last one. A picture might be worth a thousand words:

loopIn() works before the first keyframe (and when you’re defining a range, counts keyframes forward); loopOut() works after the last keyframe (and when you’re defining a range, counts keyframes backward).

  • You’re using the Lossless output module, which is excellent for archival but bad for playback (unless you have an extremely fast hard drive). Try encoding that AVI to a more playback-friendly format like H.264 with Adobe Media Encoder.

This should be pretty trivial to script. What’s the format of your CSV data? Can you post a little sample that shows what the CSV export looks like?

[Kevin Han] “But I guess what I don’t understand is MOST of the time, my Disk Usage is at 0-1% when previewing a scene (which is contrary to what I said above)… and then it’ll all of a sudden spike to 50-60% for a few seconds not before going back down to 0-1%… Or sometimes even a disk usage of about 95-100%..? Might happen for about 5 or more seconds. It seems the Disk Usage happens in spikes and only for about a few seconds all while previewing out a scene.”

I suspect that Ae is moving cached frames from disk to RAM in bursts for playback.

Use the modulus operator — it returns the division remainder:

    time % 10

[Kevin Han] “I’m working on 5-10 second compositions but a lot of motion graphics, layers, effects, and AI files. I’m pretty new to AE and so I don’t get what you mean by doing “very little computation with a whole lot of footage involved.” Could you give me a scenario as to what this may look like? Not sure if I fall into this category lol.
    “

You are most likely to be CPU-bound. You don’t have a lot of footage you need to read off disk. If you were doing the Brady Bunch opening with 9 streams of 4K ProRes footage, you’d be hitting the disk hard every single frame.

[Kevin Han] “Also, could you recommend me a performance monitor software/app where I am able to monitor my disk usage?”

On Windows, check out the Performance tab in the Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc). From there, you can open Resource Monitor for more details.

    On macOS, try Activity Monitor.
