  • When I said “separate particle systems,” I meant separate instances of whatever particle system you’re using.

For example, if you’re using Form, build out the logo-to-sand animation. Then, create a new Form layer, and build a separate sand-to-logo animation. Overlap them so that as the first logo-to-sand animation is blowing away, the second sand-to-logo animation is blowing in.

Depending on your footage, this could be very difficult. There are very few things in AE that you can do without a solid understanding of the fundamentals. Todd Kopriva from Adobe has created a page about getting started with After Effects.

A couple questions: what version of AE are you running? Can you post a screen shot or a video of your footage? Is the shot locked down, or moving?

There’s a tutorial here on the COW about simple object removal. It’s several years old now, but goes through many of the fundamentals for an effect like this.

  • I’d use separate particle systems for each logo. Make sure your emitter and physics settings match, and have the second system start up as the first system winds down.

Ok, maybe some people still are using TrueVision boards.

You don’t have many TGA settings that you can tweak — your only options are bit depth and RLE encoding.

Do your TGAs have an alpha channel, or are you outputting a separate matte? If there’s no embedded alpha, does it make a difference if you manually force 24 bpc instead of 32? Does it help if you toggle the run length encoding checkbox?

  • Do you have Final Cut Studio? Compressor has a Reverse Telecine feature which detects broken cadence and adjusts accordingly.

May 26, 2010 at 11:58 am in reply to: preview two independant comps

[criis daw] “Is there a way that I can have time line be in the same place in two indepaendant comps. I know it works with nested comps but i have two comps (left eye and right eye) that i would like to be able to move the time line in one and for the time line in the the other to move with it ….. “

Nest the right eye comp into the left eye comp and turn off its visibility with the eyeball icon. AE will now consider the two comps related, so “Synchronize time of all related items” will work as expected.

As you noted, this issue has come up a lot recently. It wouldn’t surprise me if there were some Quicktime bug in Targa handling.

My answer to this is the same as my answers to the others — does it really have to be a Targa sequence? Couldn’t it be TIFF or PNG? Nobody uses TrueVision boards anymore!

May 25, 2010 at 1:35 am in reply to: Speed issue wth 4k still image (PSD) compositing

[Gerrit Schulze] “The files resist on an SSD connected via SATA.
But once in memory the one file is not touched anymore is’n it? Am I wrong? “

That is a pretty fast system, but with 4K it could still be a bottleneck. A fast SSD on SATA will top out around 250 MB/s — so a single frame would take 1-2 seconds to read.

AE will keep as much in RAM as it can, but with source footage that big, RAM goes fast. This is especially true with AE CS4 and earlier, which were 32-bit and therefore limited to 4GB of RAM per process. If your render is RAM-bound, CS5 might help, because it is 64-bit, and a single process could address all the RAM in your system.

When I work with high-res comps, I use make heavy use of proxies, the region of interest, and custom low resolutions and skipped frames in Shift-RAM previews.

May 24, 2010 at 10:38 pm in reply to: HDMI input/output for monitoring

Rather than looping through a monitor, how about an HDMI splitter? Gefen makes one.

It passes EDID from the primary display back to the source. Both of your displays must be capable of the same resolution and refresh rate.

What’s your storage like? A fast RAID will make working with 4K a lot easier.
