[Frank Miller] ”
Why is this? Is there something I can do? Obviously I’d like to be confident that what changes I make in Color are reproduced exactly when the footage comes back to FCP…”Sounds like you’re using the Preview window in Color and then comparing it to the Canvas in FCP. They don’t match, never have.
You have to have an external calibrated display fed by a proper video card / external box. Such as by AJA, BlackMagic, Matrox, etc….

Stuff like this is really easy to do in Color if you want to take some time to play in there. I had to a horror feature a few years ago where I had to make the predominate color palette green.
You can see the work on my Samples Page in the Color Enhancement samples. The cool thing is once you get the look you want, you can save it and then keep tweaking it or applying it to other shots. I also had to do some ultra bright bluish outdoor scenes and some technicolor dream sequences.

[Gary Askham] “You shouldn’t need to use Compressor or any other 3rd party applications. Final Cut Pro’s Log and Transfer works with most pro video formats.”
Not MPEG-4 or H.264 unless something has changed in recent years.

[Roli Rivelino] “Thanks Tom, however I can be a bit cumbersome with Compressor, any advice on bit rates and key frames and the like when I’m running it through?”
Compressor has multiple Format presets. We convert all Mp4 material to Apple ProRes for edit. We simply use the preset provided by Apple with no changes.

No need to go back to FCP.
After the renders are done, grab all 40 of them and throw them into Compressor. They will already be in ProRes HQ so there is no need to use compressor to compress them again into this format.
Throw the Photo-JPEG setting of your choice on the clips and render.
Now you’ll have two sets of clips, ProRes HQ and Photo-JPEG

[Mark Suszko] “Not one take is good.
The client is not concerned:
We’ll fix it in post”Ding Ding Ding Ding!!!!! We have a winner! I was going to participate in this, but that is simply brilliant. It shall be immortalized on our walls.

H.264 files look amazing on HD displays too when compressed full sized and with good compression techniques. I put YouTube 720p outputs up onto my plasma screen all the time and they look good.

AVC Intra is an acquisition format, not a delivery format. There is nothing that I know of that will deliver an AVC Intra file. Generally you work with AVC Intra footage in a ProRes timeline. I don’t know of anyone who actually cuts / delivers in AVC I

[Cody Walters] “Can you explain how Encore is a dud when it comes to Blu-ray?”
That’s easy. You spend your time creating a very nice custom menu, or modifying one of the provided stock menus, then you burn it to a BluRay disc and nothing happens. It doesn’t work. It’s been that way since Encore introduce the “blu-ray” option three years ago even though Adobe keeps telling me that the BluRay functions work.
If all you require is a simple “Play Only” BluRay disc, Encore is great, that’s what we use it for.
If you require functional menus beyond just “Play Only” then you’ll need something else. We have DoStudio from NetBlender in our shop for that.

When you hit “Play” on the VTR, the 1400 will show you what the format is of the tape. Generally 720 or 1080 right there in the TC display window.
Then you have to check your FW settings on the VTR to make sure they match what the tape is playing. Generally the FW output defaults to downconversion to DV or DVCAM mode so you’ll need to change that for HD output. You’ll need to go through the menus to ensure the FW output matches what the deck is playing and then match up FCP to the same.
The format of the video if in HD will be DVCPro HD so you need to select one of those Easy Setups for ingesting.
