CatDV is what you would use for something like this. You log the media into a database that can then be retrieved by FCP or any other NLE in the future.

I think we’re finally going to move forward with an idea I’ve toyed with in the past. Install the new OS, all our software to a single brand new 1TB Drive. Then clone that to 6 other drives for all our multiple workstations. On each clone, simply throw away the serial number information and re-enter the correct serial number for each workstation. Pop the cloned hard drive inside the Mac Pro, re-set the Startup disk and away we go.
I’ve talked to a few engineers and they say this concept does work and has been used by some other facilities in the past. Seems simple enough.

I plan to install the software on my personal 27″ iMac at home to see what features are in it and whether we can continue to use it in our Post production facility or switch to Avid or Premiere.
it’s not going anywhere’s near my pro machines until we know what it can do and if it plays well with our 3rd party equipment / software.

What’s going to happen when 2 million plus users all hit the Apple servers at the same time to download the software? Or folks who have spotty internet connections that go out for minutes at a time interrupting downloads….
You might be right on the VAR thing. They download it for their clients and then ship them on discs.

If this is really an image of Motion from a rumor site, it looks like a mashup of Shake and Motion.
However, this has nothing to do with FCP which is my main concern. We use Motion as a particle generator right now, not much else.
Once I have my questions answer on what FCP includes / doesn’t include then we’ll be able to move forward. In the meantime, discussions continue with other vendors.

Yes they do use NTSC and PAL with HD formats.
1080 / 60i is NTSC. It works with the 60khz electrical cycle in the United States so you don’t get an image flicker.
1080i / 50i is PAL. It works with the 50khz electrical cycle in Europe and will flicker when you watch it on a television in the united states.
720 / 30 and 60 are NTSC.
720 / 25 and 50 are PAL.
As we deliver programming to both the US and Europe, we have to deal with NTSC to PAL conversion as a regular course of business and yes, the formats are still referred to as PAL and NTSC.

Are we shocked by the fact that Apple did not mention FCP at the WWDC? Can we ever find an example of FCP or any other ProApp being mentioned at the WWDC other than maybe some sort of chart or graph?
When Apple is darn good and ready, they’ll release it and then we find out how good / bad it really is. Of course the pricing strategy is brilliant. It means that they will be satisfying the needs of the majority of their users.
Say there’s 250,000 Pro Users who all require Capture / Edit to Tape functions right now. That’s a sizeable chunk of the 2,000,000+ registered users.
$299 price = maybe 5 to 10,000,000 registered users after the first year. I mean if you edit video you’d be nuts to not buy at least one copy to have in your toolbox “just to have it.”
Now those 250,000 Pro Users are just a small minority and of course we know how Apple feels about the minority of users……
I’m still waiting to hear reaction from Walter Murch and the Coen Brothers since those are the two flagship pro editors Apple always trots out to remind us how professional Final Cut Pro is.

Yep, it seems you will HAVE to have a Decklink Card or AJA Kona card in order to capture / layback to tape as you will need 3rd party utilities from them in order to complete both of these tasks.
Completely asinine from Apple to drop these functions (if true), but when you have your head in the iCloud you tend to not think that clearly in terms of professional video production.
