[Daniel Estrada] “Perhaps but its irrelevant to my problem statement.”
You mean like the application no longer linking to the media because your connection is too slow? You need a faster media connection to work with and play back video.
USB 3 drive to USB 3 port will work fine.
USB 2 port will not work well at all for editing video. The data transfer rate is too slow. Thus you will have an unstable system.

[Daniel Estrada] “1TB Lacie HD connected to a USB2 port.”
USB2 is not fast enough for editing video. A USB3 drive works quite well. USB 2, nope.

January 27, 2016 at 1:54 pm in reply to: I have some fairly serious Mac/Windows concerns to address before I throw all of my money at a computor[Josh Williams] “-Transferring files between the two, this is the first problem I came across with card and hard drive formats not liking each other. this normally means just reformatting and doing it again but this could end up being a bigger problem with tighter deadlines ect..”
If you have a properly configured network this is a non-issue. I had to switch storage providers because my original SAN could not deal with the cross platform workflow. Since switching to Studio Network Solutions we go back and forth across our Dell and Mac machines with zero issues. The only thing that has to happen is that the media has to reload because the drive names are different due to the Windows insistence that everything has to have a letter and the Mac they can just be names. On the PC side we can see the names after the letters so it’s easy to know which drive the files came from.
[Josh Williams] “-ProRes, there is no way of me exporting Prores easily that I know of with windows (I did try to download a complicated programme to do this to no avail..)”
No, there is not. The Cineform codec on the PC is what we output to there and you can also output to DNxHD from Avid. If you MUST output to ProRes, then get a Mac Mini or cheap iMac. I plan to keep one Mac in the shop for that very reason.
PC can read ProRes all day long.
[Josh Williams] “-SRGB, I have been told that windows works in RGB and Mac SRGB which means that windows will always be limited as far as colour depth and accuracy is concerned. I don’t exactly know how deep down the rabbit hole of grading I need to go although obviously I want to plan to have options for the future.”
Somebody doesn’t know what they’re talking about. Your video is processed and output via the video card such as Blackmagic Design and AJA Video Systems. People have been color grading with Davinci Resolve for years on PCs so if that was really a problem, you would have seen it across your movie and television screens for years.
I’ve been Mac since 1996 and now I have one Dell and am spec’ing out a Main Gear system. Windows gives much more flexibility so long as your media storage is properly set up for the cross platform workflow. If it is not, then you have a lot of pain.

Resolve is still a “must have” in my opinion for anyone color grading. Especially since it’s free, only requiring the pro version after a certain level, used to be 4k but I’m not sure what that is now. But you can try it out for free. I’ve been using the tool for probably 6 years now. Super simple to move projects from PPro and back again.
SpeedGrade is supposed to be very very good as well, though I have not gotten into that application yet. I understand there are some limits to what it can do but for much of what needs to be done in a show or film, it can handle it.
https://mixinglight.com is your best resource for all things color grading honestly. Pat Inhofer created the site with Robbie Carman and Dan Moran. Three of the best colorists in the world. I use that site for advice and training myself. They have full in depth lessons on all the tools out there plus a lot of really good practical advice on all things color grading.
As for automatically matching the look of the second camera, I still do that manually and simply save off the grade. It’s rare that auto matching actually works as well as manually doing the match.

Anthro Console Cart 2. I’ve used them for 7 years.

Here’s an older shot of it in my Edit 1 suite. The keyboard shelf comes all the way up so we can stand up and we have all the monitors on swing arms so we can raise them up. I stand up about 80% of each day.

If you used the 3D tools in AE to rotate the videos 180 degrees that won’t translate into Premiere Pro. AE has a “Flip Horizontal” tool that does the same thing as Premiere Pro tool of the same name. Should use that.

[Ann Bens] “XML means you are left with just the edits and some transitions.”
Not when it’s Premiere Pro to Premiere Pro. Everything comes across just fine. At least in my experience.
Going between NLEs things get lost in translation, but when just moving from a Premiere version to Premiere version, everything comes across just fine.

[Gary Childress] “I did find the install as everybody mentioned. But now I have a wierd problem where PP2014 says that the projects were created in a newer version and can’t be opened. Yet in PP2015 the same projects will open with the created in a prior version error and they must be converted.”
You can’t take a project backwards in versions. You need to make an XML from CC2015 and then open that in CC2014.

You need to go into the Previous Versions section of the Creative Cloud App.
Follow these instructions from my blog about downloading Encore CS6. Just go to Premiere Pro CC2014 instead. https://walterbiscardi.com/downloading-adobe-encore-for-dvd-authoring/
