Yes, if you have equipment older than 5 years, it’s obsolete. Doesn’t mean it’s worthless and can’t continue to make money, mind you, but it is obsolete and you really shouldn’t expect the manufacturers to offer full support. The manufacturers have moved 5 years down the road. They expect you to move along with them.
I just tried out the iOgrapher for the first time on a recent cruise. Yes, I absolutely CAN shoot episodes with my iPhone 6 and I intend to start doing that very soon.
The world is changing, it’s generally getting cheaper and yes you can continue to use that obsolete equipment or you can sell it today while it still has some value and upgrade to the newer, cheaper stuff.

You can create a fake zoom cut by simply scaling up the image to 125 or 140% and making it look like there was a second camera or that you zoomed in between answers. Stay on the scaled up shot for about 10 – 15 seconds or to a natural cut point.
Can add a few more of these throughout the testimonial so it doesn’t look obvious as just one cut in the entire thing. Can also reposition the shot slightly off center left or right.

On the Windows side I always look at the “Gaming” computers because they generally have the beefier GPUs which is what you want for editing video along with as much RAM as you can afford. Minimum 16GB RAM, if you can afford more the better. Cutting H264 files whether from a GH4 or GoPro is always taxing on a computer. One way to make the editing smoother could be to convert to another format like Cineform. You can do this in Adobe Media Encoder or even Davinci Resolve (free) which has awesome media management / transcode features.
That being said, I cut GH4 natively on my woefully underpowered MacBook Air all the time using a USB3 hub powered drive. It works fine for offline, but for a large project it would start to bog down for sure. This machine is only 1.3Ghz Intel Core i5 with 4GB RAM.

[Todd Terry] “What this type of scammer almost invariably does is “accidently” overpay and ask you to send them a check (or wire them the money) for the difference… or pays in full and then cancels a job and asks for a refund. Their original check, of course, is rubber.”
Yep, get enough people to send some money to you and it adds up. It’s another variation on the Prince of Nigeria asking us to send him $10,000 so he can send us our unclaimed millions. Just a smaller version of it so it looks legit.

[Bob Mark] “Red flags: consumer looking gmail address”
That part should not be a red flag. I work with many broadcast and corporate producers and even well known television hosts who all use ‘consumer’ gmail accounts.
The rest of it, yeah, that’s pretty obvious, but “consumer looking gmail address” doesn’t sway me one way or the other.

You can also try reaching out to the CLIA, Cruse Line Industry Association. Nice folks. I’m developing a series around cruising and have found them very approachable.

If you’re doing a paid gig, it has to have full clearance from the cruise line. There is generally a specific interface at each cruise line, such as Public Relations or Communications dept.

I just returned from a cruise. Took my GH4 and an iOgrapher along. Shot about 5 hours of footage total over 7 days. Not for a job, all for my own B-Roll use.

To be honest, Lynda.com is the gold standard in training and advice. They have such a wealth of working talent across a broad spectrum of many industries now. Plus the purchase by LinkedIn brought a whole new wealth of funds and knowledge that little guys will not be able to compete with.
I was hopeful to start something with WalterBiscardi.com in the training space, but people just don’t want to subscribe to small sites as much anymore. Folks like MixingLight.com are the rare exception with three insanely talented artists putting incredible information up there each week.
The realities of thousands of hours of free tutorials, good and bad, on YouTube / Vimeo along with powerhouses like Lynda make it very difficult to rely on training as your sole income source.
