  • [Daniel_l] “Personally I’d avoid the Animation codec and use Motion JPEG @ 100% quality”

Except that in his original post, he said MJPEG is giving him Gamma Shifts. That’s why I suggested Animation.

[Suzanne] “Thank you. This helps a lot. Just what I was looking for :)”

You’re welcome. Just read up on the procedure before you get there and I would put a bookmark in the manual on that section in case you have some problems. If you get the opportunity to do a test Edit to Tape, then do that as well.

[Steve Veasey] “Wanting to get the best mixer console for FCPHD that can be connected using Firewire or USB with no problems….Please help.”

With NAB only two weeks away, I’d certainly wait to see what products get announced by Apple and also audio equipment companies. Right now Mackie has the only Firewire mixer I know of, but that doesn’t mean someone else won’t introduce one in a few weeks.

[Roy Stanton] “Oh, and they want it all completed in two weeks.

Any advice, information, likely time, would be greatly, greatly appreciated.”

Hope you have some help on this one. As Tony suggested, charge them your hourly rate and inform them that there will be overtime plus additional help coming in to work on this. I don’t think I would take on that job with that deadline.

[Suzanne] “Is it best to Edit to Tape? Is Print to Video an option? The tape will already be black and coded and my guess is that they will want to have it start at a specific timecode. I don’t have a deck setup at home, so I can’t see the Edit to Tape options/steps/etc. Can anyone talk me thru what I should expect? “

Perform an Edit to Tape. If the tape is blacked and codec, start your Timeline at the same timecode the tape starts at. Then you start your video at the proper timecode specified by the client. For instance, if the blacked tape starts at 00:00:00:00 and your client wants you to start the project 2 minutes in, then you create a timeline that starts at 00:00:00:00 but your first video appears at 00:02:00:00. For those first two minutes you’ll probably lay bars, slug and slate. After your edit is complete, you will probably set an In Point in your timeline at the start of the bars and then set a matching In Point in the Edit to Tape Window. Since the tape is blacked, you can perform an Insert Edit.

You need to look at your footage on an external monitor.

  • Have you tried exporting using the Animation (Lossless) codec? Generally that is the preferred codec to move Quicktimes from one format to another or one NLE to another.

[ken Pugh] “I have an avid timeline – and a box of tapes. I’d like to digitise the tapes (21 hours) and then link the media to the Avid edit. Is this possible? I understand automatic duck will convert the avid timeline to fcp – but will I then be able to link the converted fcp timeline to my newly digitised rushes? “

I’m not sure if that will work. I use the Automatic Duck for this and it’s pretty bullet proof. Open the AVID timeline in FCP and then re-capture the footage. If you had the original footage from the AVID edit, you could relink to that original footage in FCP.

So has anyone figured out if it plays with the 844x? I can’t seem to find out. A client of mine uses that version and may be interested in this setup. Just curious if anyone has that knowledge.
