    Aloha,
I bought the new HDV camera and have shot some stuff on the HDV setting. I also got the M1U deck to go with my system. When I play back what I’ve shot set to down-convert to DV for input to FCP everything seems to be ok. When I check the clip in the Viewer, it looks as I would expect. When I drop the clip onto the timeline and look at it there, it shows in letterbox format. I selected SQUEEZE for the down-convert–opposed to LETTERBOX or EDGE CROP. Any ideas for getting my stuff to look the way it’s supposed to?

You need to look at your footage on an external monitor.

Make sure your DV sequence is in widescreen. If you’re seeing letterboxing it sounds as if the DV sequence is standard 4:3.

    Hi,

I can’t answer your question but maybe you can help me!
I’m considering the HDV camera for broadcast work that I would normally do in anamorphic DV. Do you notice much difference in picture quality when downconverted??

(I think your answer lies in your sequence settings as others have explained).

    Thanks,

    Johnny

Make sure “Anamoprhic 16×9” is checked on in the sequence settings. Your setting of “squeezed” is the correct one.

    System A Info G5/Dual 2 – 10.3.6 – QT v6.5.2 – 4GB ram – Radeon 9800Pro – Lacie FW800 L1 RAID via Lacie PCI card and internal – Decklink Extreme – Wacom 6×8 System B is identical except: 2GB ram – Decklink SP – Radeon 9600 – Pro Tools

I have a further question rather than an answer re this subject.
I have been shooting with Z1 in DVCAM mode no problems. Edits fine in FCP.
When I burn a DVD, it looks stretched. i.e. anamorphic.
I have tried making my quicktime movie in PALDV 48K and PALDV 48K anamorphic.
    Still comes out the same.
I am using Toast 6 for burning DVD.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi Vlad,

Is Toast doing the compression or are you using something else? I’m assuming the material is 4:3 to start and it sounds like whatever is compressing it thinks it’s 16:9.

    All the best,

    Tom
