December 26, 2010 at 1:50 am in reply to: New i7 w/ FCP 6.0 not recognizing Sony Capture DeckYou didn’t connect the machine to the iMac while it was turned on, did you? That can fry the Sony VTR Firewire port and / or the iMac Firewire port.
Beyond that, if you’re trying to capture HDV, be sure you’re in an HDV Easy Setup and make sure the Sony deck is set for HDV playback via firewire.
If you’re trying to capture DV, then you have to ensure you have the Firewire set to downconvert to DVCAM via Firewire for FCP to properly recognize the deck.
When we run our Sony HDV decks via the AJA Kona boards, we have to set the Firewire output to downconvert to DVCAM for deck control.

[David Roth Weiss] “Ron explained to me that the new mechanism for leadership above is fluid… So Walter, when you have time to write more you’ll be back on top above.”
Yes, David, I’m fully aware of this. I receive the emails daily from the forums. With hosting so many forums on the Cow I like to move around and answer questions in all of them so I don’t appear quite as often in the FCP forums as I used to.
Got a lot of tutorials planned once we get into the new building though, will finally have the equipment AND time. Woo hoo!

December 17, 2010 at 12:24 pm in reply to: editing iphone4 HD footage: best sequence settings?[Michael Sacci] “convert it to ProRes first and then match those settings.”
That’s precisely what we do here. Throw it all into Compressor and batch convert everything to ProRes.

[Matt Surf] “For my new project, I recently converted some Canon EOS 550d H264 footage in MPEG Streamclip using the XDCam 1080p 30 setting and also have some XDCam HDV footage imported direct from the camera’s files.”
Wow, that’s a terrible conversion. You’re adding so much compression to the H264 switching over to XDCAM. Convert all your files to ProRes and try again.
[Matt Surf] “However, when I put the converted clips on the timeline the Canvas only shows them in low quality, with aliasing and juddery playback. I’ve changed my settings to Unlimited RT but there doesn’t seem to be any improvement.”
Have you RENDERED the clips and then looked at them? Particularly if you have your RT playback set up for Dynamic playback. RealTime playback just does whatever is necessary to maintain PLAYBACK of your files, irregardless of quality. So FCP will dynamically drop the quality of your video to maintain proper frame rate. When you have mixed formats, multiple layers of video, graphics, etc… this is what FCP does. Sacrifices playback quality for frame rate.
[Matt Surf] “I can’t believe that my quad core PC running Vegas Pro 9 can handle these files better than my brand new Mac … could it???”
Vegas is Sony. XDCAM is Sony. Who do you think will work with the format best?

We do a couple of things.
First all of our current clients, colleagues, vendors, etc… all get Christmas cards. They’re all a part of our “family” and we want to say thank you to everyone who both works for us, gets us gear and of course, those who pay us for what we love to do.
I make sure every envelope is hand addressed rather than computer generated. Just a small touch but it does make the cards stand out when they arrive. We also all sign the card personally. Well, all of us except Molly. Her paws are too messy….
We started sending some clients hot chocolate a few years ago and that has gone over well. Just a small container that’s good for about 10 or so cups, so it doesn’t go to waste over the winter.
And a few clients get more creative gifts, especially those who have done a LOT of business with us. This is usually some sort of toy or game because, well I’m a sucker for fun toys and games! Anyone who visits our shop and sees my office knows this right away.
So whatever you do, try to make it somewhat personal and reflective of who you are and what your company is all about. In my case we’re all about excellent service in a very friendly, relaxed, low-key atmosphere. We love to have fun, our clients have fun when they’re here so I like our cards and gifts to be fun.
Now Todd has certainly given me an idea for next year’s card…….

December 9, 2010 at 6:29 pm in reply to: Filmed 50i in USA, having rolling shutter problem in post, any solution in FCP??[Tawqeer Mirza] “However, in the actual footage that was taken when changing the shot, I get the issue with the rolling shutter which I didn’t notice until now. Is there a way to fix this in FCP or on Mac??”
Indoors you’re going to run into the 50hz vs. 60hz electrical issue. You’ll see flickering from all the lighting indoors.
We see the exact same thing when we shoot NTSC (60i) in Europe and play the footage back here. There’s a continuous flicker in the shot from 50hz electrical in Europe.
