The only thing I can suggest is look at your Audio / Video Settings and make sure your Audio Input is set to the Mackie.
Since you’re coming Firewire you won’t be able to capture video and audio at the same time if you choose to capture via the Mackie.
I have no experience with any Firewire audio only devices but we do use USB mics all the time with FCP so I know that working with those devices works just fine.

As with Shane I’ve never used the Motu product, but we do this on almost a daily basis with the AJA Kona boards. Simply let the board downconvert the file in realtime either in letterbox, pillarbox or anamorphic.
Really nice thing is the Kona generally have three outputs and all can be set independently. So we can lay off an HD Master and an SD submaster at the same time if we needed to. Generally we’ll do an HD Master and a DVD client copy simultaneously.

As I’ve suggested quite a few times in this very forum, the WiebeTech RTX series is a real winner for small space media storage. The beauty of this is that it’s a trayless SATA drive system so you can simply replace the drives as they fill up with no need to purchase another complete unit. go down to Fry’s, BestBuy or whatever computer / electronics store is handy and pick up some raw SATA drives.

RAID 0 is certainly faster than RAID 5 but yes, even if you are backing up every 24 hours, I would still run RAID 5 or 6. With the price of storage today and the speeds, doesn’t really make much sense to run RAID 0 any longer.
We run all Maxx Digital products here and they’ve been rock solid. We’re up to something like 48TB of their storage now both in shared and local configurations.
Small Tree and Dulce also make outstanding products as well.
Can’t go wrong with any of the three.

Non Controllable is correct. Simply roll your VHS and hit “Capture Now.”
We had to do this last year for a documentary as well. But in our case, we dubbed it over to BetaSP first so we could have deck control AND timecode in case we had to recapture it later. We simply dubbed the entire tape so we’d have it in our archives.
Did the same with some 3/4″ tape archive too.

We went ahead and left the original SuperDrive in the machine. My thinking was there are two optical slots in the machine anyway. When we burn DVDs we do that with the SuperDrive. When we burn BluRays, we use the BluRay drive.
Less wear and tear on both drives and in theory both should last longer since they’re not being used as much. And if one dies, well then we still have another in the machine.

The theater will only play what they ask for. we’ve been on the film festival circuit for a few years now and have delivered DV, HDV, Beta, DigiBeta, HDCAM, BluRay and DVD. Why so many formats? Because it’s what the film festival / theater asks for.
We considered DCP in a few instances but changed our mind when we found out there are different DCP formats out there and you have to deliver the exact format for the theater that will do the screening. Each format is quite expensive to have created.

I don’t use Autosave. I only use Command+S all the time. Been a habit since I started editing on NLEs.
I never ever put Project files on the external media drives.
