  • BluRay Burner Installation?

Posted by David Roth weiss on January 27, 2011 at 10:32 pm

I’m adding-on a Pioneer BluRay burner to a MacPro and it has occurred to me that I will gain very little by having a second optical disc drive onboard. So, I’m considering simply removing the DVD burner and replacing with the new BluRay burner. The BluRay burner will of course burn and play DVD-Rs and all other optical discs in addition to it’s BluRay capabilities.

    Anyone foresee a possible downside?

We’ve done that with one of our systems. No down-side we can see yet.

    :)”

Gotcha Jeremy! I’m not thinking about using them for playing video, just using ’em for archival purposes…

And yes, I read your earlier missive about that… My fingers and toes are all crossed XXXXXXXXXX, as I too have had DVDs that simply became vapor.

Works great David, just have the right rev of toast so you are not limited to what the Mac OS will and will not let you do 🙂

    Thanks David.

A professional associate of mine, who has been in the industry many more years than I, once told me “Michael, the Greats give back.”

So, I thought at least I would try and make my way to that goal; thus, I’ve been helping and sharing as much as humanly possible here on the ‘cow.

    Good luck on the BluRay!

We went ahead and left the original SuperDrive in the machine. My thinking was there are two optical slots in the machine anyway. When we burn DVDs we do that with the SuperDrive. When we burn BluRays, we use the BluRay drive.

Less wear and tear on both drives and in theory both should last longer since they’re not being used as much. And if one dies, well then we still have another in the machine.
