Better quality down conversion

Well, I have no experience with the Motu V4HD to testify to the quality of the downconvert. I do know that AJA Kona cards do it very well, as do the Matrox MXO2 cards. Their hardware downconvert is the best next to After Effects. Compressor is behind that…behind the Terranex, AJA/Matrox, After Effects.

But, you can always test for yourself. Output once using the V4HD, then another time using Compressor…and look and see what you see.

As with Shane I’ve never used the Motu product, but we do this on almost a daily basis with the AJA Kona boards. Simply let the board downconvert the file in realtime either in letterbox, pillarbox or anamorphic.

Really nice thing is the Kona generally have three outputs and all can be set independently. So we can lay off an HD Master and an SD submaster at the same time if we needed to. Generally we’ll do an HD Master and a DVD client copy simultaneously.

I love MOTU for their audio interfaces. That’s where they are good at.
The first test experience i had with a MOTU videoproduct and FCP was terrible
The unit mixed up PAL and NTSC framerates. Now that’s a bad start.

Save yourself trouble and get a AJA, Blackmagic or Matrox solution.

I do have a Kona but I need to do this in the field – I have a V4HD so I figure I can allow this unit to do it.

I have these solutions for my stationary units (desktops) but I have a V4HD fro my portable stuff.
