You can Make the Position Coordinated x=0,y=0 of any object by Parenting it to a Null Object.
1. Make a new Null Object so that it will be at the center of the comp.
2. Center your object at x= width/2, y=height/2.
3. Parent it to the Null and its new coordinates will be 0,0.
Here is an Example:

Can’t say anything about changing the coordinate system in AE but you can understand it through this tutorial.

1. In the Effects Control Panel, Twirl down Particle Property and Change the Opacity map from Birth to Death to Custom. Make a Flat solid Grey Opacity Map.
2. Key Birth Rate to Zero where you want the emitter to stop emitting particles.
3. Increase Resistance(say 2) so that Particles will stop spreading at a certain time.

Hi chris
Try to make the same effect by animating the mask properties(I would prefer Expansion) or by using a Light and a 3D layer as suggested by Ted.

“As the ‘spotlight gets larger the edges soften and the opacity decreases to zero ( ie the effect fades off ) .”
How are you animating the size of spotlight? By increasing the size of Solid or by changing the mask properties(mask path, expansion, feather, etc)?

Trapcode Mir creates polygon mesh and quick rendering 3D shapes.
You can create mountains and landscapes using Texture Map, Fractal noise for distortion and much more.
