With the cam connected and powered – Under File/Capture, click the Settings tab and click the Options button under Device Control. See if your cam is available. If not, try clicking the ‘Go online…’ button.

Is there any way you can try the cam on a system that you know to be in proper order – It’s possible the cam’s firewire might be dead?? Do you have another firewire device you can test on your system, to see if it has any issues??

I assume you’re in a 16:9 project.
Check the clip info in the Project window, next to the poster frame, by selecting a clip in the bin. It should say (1.2). If not, shift-select all of the clips, right-click on them and ‘Interpret Footage’.
Maybe uncheck ‘Scale clips’ in your general project settings.

You should pre-process all square pixel images, for full or widescreen.
For Widescreen…

1-Open image in Photoshop, duplicate the layer and delete the background.

2-Set the Canvas size to 864×480 pixels.

3-Set the image size (Uncheck ‘Constrain Proportions’) to 720×480, Resample the image with Bicubic Sharper.

4-Save as PSD.

You can also create an action or a droplet if you have a bunch of images to process.

Once you are back in Premiere you may have to interpret the images as 1.2 PAR, but they will now be correct.

If this thing is ever going to be displayed on a CRT you should also ‘deflicker’ your images.

Try to import the AVI into a new Elements project. If it works, than you might have a corrupted project file.
You might be able to try nesting the old project into the new project??

But, If VLC can’t play the AVI than it sounds like the file has been corrupted..

I’d try decompressing the AVI with AVS Video Converter…

Encoding is something that you really have to experiment with. I usually work with DV or 1/4 screen desktop video, so I don’t have a more specific solution.

I’d suggest you do some test encodings with a thirty-second clip, until you find an encoding solution that suits your needs. I’ve seen some real nice h264 encoding. I’m not sure if MPEG2 supports 1024×720? You probably just need to experiment with the settings.
Usually ‘bitrate’ and ‘quality’ are the settings that you want to mess with.
