Just one more thing I thought of. Did you try using the render queue and changing the render format to that same Mpg2 codec? (Assuming it will show up there as well…)

I could be wrong, but I don’t believe that AE (Production bundle 7 here) comes with any Mpeg2 Export out of the box.
So it must showing up from another piece of software installed that has that codec, and which may not be compatible with AE ?
If you do have Encore, you should probably export as uncompressed first anyway and then let Encore do the Encoding.
Or if you have Premiere and the Production bundle (Dynamic Link) import the AE project in premiere and use Adobe media Encoder export.

Haaa I love my pc 😉 But hey I still have that G4 handy…
First, make sure that your keyboard is set the right “language”, it won’t work otherwise.
If that isn’t the issue, You may need to update your OS if you haven’t done so yet.
I remember that issue coming up with tiger, it was solved after the update.

Make sure that nothing else is plugged in your firewire card.
Other than that, are you going through a DV deck, or a canopus type DV/An converter ?
Is it working with Premiere ?

If you simply talking about recreating what would be a blue screen, you can simply apply the video as a material to a plane and size it as you wish. I usually apply it as luminance.

Perfect, thanks for the native export tip as well. I was just used to exporting as RPF using my previous 3D Software and never looked further.

Just as a personal comment regarding all crash related issues.
It is “very” often due to the fact that the computer running premiere is also the “familly” computer.
If you are using Premiere at a Pro level, that should be one of the very, very few applications present and running on that computer. Even an antivirus can cause problems for very obvious reasons.
And yes, there are vey specific harware requirements. If you have ever used Avid’s products, you would think that Adobe is very loose on those requirements. For a while Avid even required you to buy their “own” computer system.
I have, as other mentioned, never experienced crashes, except with some old versions of Adobe Encore, which seem to be pretty much stable now.

Also on a side note, color banding seems to be much more visible on some LCD monitors.
